Demeton-S is a chemical compound from the group of thiophosphoric acid esters .

Extraction and presentation

Demeton-S can be obtained by reacting 2-hydroxyethylethyl sulfide with diethyl chlorothiophosphate in toluene in the presence of anhydrous sodium carbonate and metallic copper . Isomerization produces about a 65:35 mixture of Demeton-O and Demeton-S, the mixture of the two compounds being called Demeton (CAS number: 8065-48-3).

properties

Demeton-S is a colorless liquid that is sparingly soluble in water. The technical product has an unpleasant odor of mercaptan .

use

Demeton-S (like Demeton-S-methyl and Demeton-S-methylsulfoxide ) is used as an acaricide and insecticide against mites, aphids and insects such as whitefly , cicadas, thrips and leaf miners .

Admission

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, no pesticides with this active ingredient are permitted.
