The Departamento Capital is located in the center of the province of Salta in northwest Argentina and is one of 23 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered to the north by the department of La Caldera , to the northeast and east by the department of General Güemes , to the south by the departments of Metán and Guachipas and to the west by the departments of Chicoana , Cerrillos and Rosario de Lerma .
The capital of the department is Salta .
