The Popolski Show is a parodic cabaret show with musical interludes founded by Achim Hagemann under the pseudonym "Pawel Popolski" . In March 2008 she started in the late evening program of the WDR . Well-known pop-rock classics are, on the one hand, significantly alienated musically, on the other hand, they are incorporated into a comedic framework.

Since 2015 it has been continued as The Popolski living room show , consisting of Pawel and Dorota Popolski ( Iva Buric Zalac ).

concept

The cabaret show follows a concept according to which the actors are members of the Popolski family, who comes from Poland and is clichéd. This includes the fictional legend of the Popolski family, in which the grandfather, "Pjotrek Popolski", plays an important role. At the beginning of the 20th century he is said to have composed 128,000 pieces and to be the author of all pop classics, which, however, were stolen from him by an unscrupulous manager. As a result, criminal figures on the black market sold copies of his compositions to all kinds of pop stars in the world, including Prince , Modern Talking and Howard Carpendale . Pawel's favorite saying is: Dieter Bohlen stole all of his hits in Poland. The request of the Popolski family is now to help their old grandfather to late fame and to replenish their own wallet by performing the "original" polka versions of the hits as composed by their grandfather. Since they see themselves as guardians of this musical legacy, the band of the family would also be called "The Pops".

The members of this pseudo-Polish family of musicians all represent more or less crazy existences. Each of these characters also gets his own appearance in the cabaret show. According to the concept, the entire family comes from Zabrze , a town in the center of the Upper Silesian coal mining area .

One of the members of the family is "Pawel Popolski", the eldest of the Popolski brothers, who moderates the cabaret show and introduces all the other characters. There is also the blind "Danusz Popolski", whose piano is in the junk room and who is the only one who is not disturbed by the family chaos. "Mirek Popolski" in faux fur drives any electrical amplifier into a short circuit. “Janusz Popolski”, “the youngest brother and the gloomiest cup of the whole family”, plays bass, never speaks and breaks down in tears when he is supposed to open his mouth. “Dorota Popolski”, the cousin, is touted as “the hottest of the hottest”, as she appears in a lasciviously slit fish skin dress. Finally, among the other characters, among others, the hard-drinking identical twins "Henjek" and "Stenjek" that occur as Wind Duet, the "Bogdan Popolski" architect in blue overalls, the polka - accordion player and second guitarist "Marek Popolski" the porn star and " Ambassador of love ”“ Andrzej Popolski ”and the pomadish“ Tomek Popolski ”, who is presented as the“ Tiger of Zabrze ”.

The television version broadcast on WDR in 2008 takes place in an alleged Polish prefabricated housing estate on the twelfth floor, including a power failure.

In April 2014 after the final tour “Polka's coming home - The best of the best”, the “The Popolski Family” project ended and the band members went their separate ways. The last concert took place on April 6, 2014 in the sold out Heinrich-Lades-Halle in Erlangen .

In the winter of 2014 Achim Hagemann published the book The Popolski Family and went on a reading tour with it in 2015.

Actors and Criticism

The head of the ensemble is Achim Hagemann, who comes from Recklinghausen and became known to the wider public primarily through his numerous appearances with Hape Kerkeling .

On December 10th, 2009 the singer Henning Schwarzhoff, who appeared on the cabaret show as "Isidor Popolski", died of a heart attack at the age of 39.

In 2006, 2008 and 2009 the ensemble received various nominations for various music, cabaret and television awards.

In the broadest sense, this group could also be called a cover band , as they play pieces that were made known to the audience for example through Tom Jones (Sex Bomb) , Alcazar (Crying at the Discotheque) or Die Ärzte (Junge) .

The alienation and refinement of the pieces, however, is a separate achievement. By changing the tempi, by using the means of syncope , by an unusual choice of instruments (for example trombone and harp ), an individual style formation is pursued and also achieved (for example to one Pop - Polka - Reggae - Crossover ).
