action

France in 1814 . Edmond Dantes, the second officer of the merchant ship “Pharao”, is eagerly awaited by his fiancée Mercedes after a long journey in the port of Marseille . At the reunion, a commissioner suddenly appears with a group of soldiers and declares Dantes arrested. He is accused of being a Bonapartist . Without a trial, he is sent to the prison on the island fortress of Château d'If . Three men who are hostile to him started this intrigue. First of all, the naval officer Caderousse, who has the same rank as Dantes and fears that he could become the next captain on the "Pharao" instead of him. The second conspirator is the officer Fernand de Montcerf, who would like to win Edmond's fiancée for himself. The third, who is in league with the two, is called Henri de Villefort, a senior civil servant whose father is himself an ardent Bonapartist. Because Dantes knows this secret, he should disappear from the scene forever.

17 years have passed at the Château d'If. Another prisoner, the Abbé Faria, had managed to get in touch with Dantes. A close friendship has developed between the two. Faria knows about a treasure that was buried many years ago on the island of Monte Christo . When they dig an underground passage to escape, the Abbé dies. Dantes can escape by having himself sewn into the sack that is supposed to be thrown into the sea.

Dantes raises the treasure and thereby arrives at an immeasurable wealth. From then on he pretends to be the "Count of Monte Christo". With this title he returned to Marseille to take revenge on his intriguers. He learns that his father has since died of sheer grief and that Mercedes, believing he is dead, has married Fernand de Montcerf. Edmond's loyal childhood friend Morel is financially ruined. His first aid belongs to him. Because his three adversaries have now settled in Paris, he is now also settling in this city.

In the course of time Edmond Dantes succeeds in horrific revenge on his three enemies. It remains to be seen whether he and Mercedes will find each other again.

Reviews

The lexicon of international film draws a negative conclusion: “The 15th version of the film [...] tries to give the event a Kleistian core and to make the hero appear as a kind of timeless Michael Kohlhaas. This attempt, in conjunction with the contemporary arabesques, went wrong - but it remains a vital, skilful adventure film with a considerable amount of equipment, camera technology and glossy paintings. Unfortunately, only the dialogue rustles like paper. ” Prisma, on the other hand, praises:“ With this three-hour film epic based on Alexandre Dumas' bestseller, the French director Claude Autant-Lara achieved a great success. Elaborately staged, this time Louis Jourdan [...] slipped into the main role of the often filmed material. "
