Mayor Georg Fischer and his wife Christine have been married for almost forty years. Christine feels hardly noticed by her husband in recent years. In the speech that Georg gives on the occasion of his retirement and in which he thanks numerous people, he does not even mention his wife, although she had given him food for thought the day before. A bouquet of forty red roses that is left in the couple's house arouses Georg's suspicion and suggests that Christine might be having an affair.

At Christine's request, Georg went to a spa treatment immediately after his retirement to quit smoking. Georg has no idea that his therapist Alexander Senn is Christine's former childhood friend. The men become friends and Alexander tells Georg about a love he has just found and raves about this woman in the highest tones.

When Alexander presents a photo to Georg on his smartphone, he realizes that Alexander is talking about his wife Christine, which confirms his conviction that Christine is having an affair. He has no idea that Christine and their daughter Mara, a judge, hatched a plan to rekindle her husband's interest in her. However, the plan only partially works, because Christine actually falls in love with her first friend Alexander again and moves in with him.

Georg then fights for his love and tries to save his marriage after all. The tips that Alexander gave him help him on how to use a lot of ingenuity to woo a woman and win her over. After the initial euphoria, Christine soon noticed that she had trouble getting along with Alexander in everyday life and at home, and her daughter and grandson Fabian were missing. It is also about Fabian when the couple find each other again. The little one, who is always forgotten somewhere by his mother, has unleashed the sailing boat lying in the harbor and is alone on the water a long way from the shore. Christine says she will now swim to her grandson and wants to know whether Georg will jump into the water with her, no matter what. She had asked him exactly that question forty years ago. They jump hand in hand into the water while Mara tries to organize a boat to get to Fabian.

Christian Kohlund said of his role that he knew the type of person he played here, that his uncle, who was mayor in Switzerland, was such a person. That is extremely dangerous in the long run, because the family is actually always left behind. When asked if there was a special challenge for him in the role of Georg, Kohlund said that every role is of course a challenge in a certain way. The most important thing is and will remain the script. In this case it was so good that it was a great pleasure. He especially remembers that in one scene he got such a lumbago while chopping wood that he had really terrible pain in the last few days of shooting and hardly knew how to get through the day. For him it is inconceivable to give up acting, but he also loves to work.

Suzusanne von Borsody regretted that there were seldom scripts "that were written for people, i.e. women from 60 and up". Uli Brée succeeded in this. The dialogues are great, as is the wit and at the same time the depth of the story. In conclusion, Borsody said, “Everyone should be able to keep a piece of childhood in themselves”.

Walter Sittler said that this film is special because it is real, loving, painful and beautiful, like real life and keeping the door to relaxed happiness open.

criticism

Tilmann P. Gangloff from Tittelbach.tv said: “Unfortunately, director Dirk Kummer lets the cat out of the bag much too early, which significantly tarnishes the joy of the story. […] The further course of the plot suggests, however, that the premature dissolution may not have been in the mind of screenwriter Uli Brée. […] The way too harmless and slow implementation fits this attitude. [...] After all, it is a pleasure to watch the actors, especially since Kohlund and Sittler visibly enjoy exchanging blows, which is not always verbal. The music makes a few ironic exclamation marks, but otherwise the only technical features are the flashbacks to the trio's youth, which are like old Super 8 films. "

The Hamburger Abendblatt wrote: “The plot is amusing, but not surprising either. The fact that the film doesn't turn out to be too conservative is thanks to the main actors, especially the strong female roles. [...] There should be more films where women over 60 are not just either grandmothers or frustrated. [...] There are too few roles in German film that start over at the age of 60 or 70 without appearing bizarre. "
