occupation

Der Nachtmahr is a film by Achim Bornhak (stage name: AKIZ ) from 2015. The central figure is 17-year-old Tina, who is haunted by nightmares after a dissolute party in which she encounters a misshapen being.

action

It's a hot summer in Berlin and Tina is out with friends to a nightly party at an outdoor pool area. One of the girls tells of a deformed embryo soaked in formalin that was shown to the students in biology class. She photographs Tina and uses her smartphone to create a morph between Tina and a photo of the embryo. Even during the party, Tina notices a shapeless being in the forest, whereupon she wants to go home. She misses her necklace on the car and finds parts of the chain on the street. While she is collecting her, she is caught by a speeding car and thrown aside. The scene is strikingly reminiscent of an accident video that a party guest had recently shown on his smartphone. But apparently Tina is not seriously injured.

Later, at home in her sleep, the creature continues to pursue her. Her parents cannot see the creature and dismiss Tina's experiences as a nightmare, after even summoned security agents cannot find any traces of an intruder.

She talks to her psychologist about the monster and he advises her to approach the being and speak to it. After an initial disgust, Tina overcomes herself and speaks to the creature. It turns out that there is a strange connection between the two: pain or injury inflicted on the being is also suffered by Tina. She gradually realizes that this is an incarnation of her deepest fears and that this being is not a threat, but rather needs protection and help. She takes it to her room and supplies it with food.

But suddenly her parents also notice the monster and are horrified. Police and doctors are called. A veterinarian drugged the monster and Tina passed out at the same time. The creature is taken to the hospital and examined. Tina eventually goes back to school, but everything has changed. Her former friends distance themselves from her and while the being in the hospital is getting worse and worse, Tina is also getting weaker. On her 18th birthday, she finds out that her parents are planning to have her admitted to a mental hospital. She escapes and saves the monster from the hospital.

Together they drive to the party originally planned for Tina's 18th birthday, which is now taking place without Tina. She confidently appears there with the creature in her arms. But everyone is horrified. Her parents arrive and Tina's father hurls a stone sculpture at the monster. In a quick sequence of cuts, Tina's traumatic experiences run again, all the way back to the car accident at the beginning of the film. When she wakes up, she finds herself in the back seat of the car. The creature sits at the wheel and the two drive into the night.

criticism

“Cinema like German sponsoring television companies don't want it” wrote Frédéric Jaeger in the Spiegel . “With its genre enjoyment, AKIZ lands a horror, monster and youth film at the same time. Because he takes each of these dimensions seriously, the film feels more mature than many current dramas. "
