The Star of Valencia is a German drama from the girl trafficking milieu of the crime film specialist Alfred Zeisler with Liane Haid and Paul Westermeier in the leading roles.
action
At a port in Spain. The “Star of Valencia” is an elegant passenger ship. When it is checked by the crew of the police boat "Leone", a momentous incident occurs. Police sergeant Savedra slaps the sailor Beppo because he is said to have broken him up through his chatter with his wife Marion. When the water policemen return to the port and the crew is allowed to go ashore to have fun in the relevant restaurants, Savedra has to stay on board and keep watch as a punishment. From a distance, the policeman sees the neon sign of the Hafenvarieté "Paradies". Here his wife Marion is the big attraction. Savedra doesn't care about the considerable punishment that could threaten him for disobeying orders, so she leaves the "Leone" and pays Marion a visit in her cloakroom. Marion is happy to see her husband again, but is also very worried, as Savedra has to hear.
He learns from her that she had to owe a lot of debt to the landlord of "Paradise", a certain Patesco, and is therefore forced to continue to work at this place. Savedra's attempt to borrow the sum of money from his friend José with which he could release his wife fails because José is stolen from. Savedra learns that a fitter is needed on the “Star of Valencia”. Since he cannot return to the "Leone" without having to fear a very severe disciplinary punishment, he applies for this post and is immediately hired. From Beppo he learns that there will be a party on board soon. But this is only intended to conceal the fact that the dancers of the “Paradise” variety are to be kidnapped and abducted. Savedra wants to intervene, but too soon he is exposed as the police officer of the water police. Savedra has to flee for his own protection and immediately seeks "paradise" to release his wife. As a fitter, he earned the necessary money for the ransom. In Marion's company, Savedra meets his superior, Captain Mendozza, and Lieutenant Diaz. Both colleagues promise Savedra to protect his wife.
Mendozza orders the worried husband to return immediately to the "Leone" in order to await his punishment for the breach of order. Savedra's report makes his superior Mendozza think. He summons Patesco for questioning when suddenly Captain Rustan from the “Star of Valencia” bursts in. Mendozza recognizes him as a criminal who has been on the wanted list for a long time, but who pulls out a weapon and shoots the police chief. Patesco, who belongs to the girl traffickers, wants to use Marion for his goals. He claims that it was Savedra who shot Mendozza out of jealousy. Marion is horrified, wants to protect her husband and takes the blame on herself. Now she has to flee if she does not want to be arrested and shows herself ready to go on board the “Star of Valencia” with all the other girls from “Paradise”. Immediately after the arrival of the young ladies, the anchor is lifted and an attempt is made to get into international waters as quickly as possible. But Savedra is faster. He takes up the chase with the police boat and arrests all members of the girl trafficking gang.
Production notes
The Star of Valencia was created between the beginning of February and April 1933 in the UFA studios in Neubabelsberg as well as in Valencia and Palma de Mallorca (both Spain).
Otto Hunte designed the film structures, Hans-Otto Borgmann took over the musical direction.
The film has a certain film-historical significance for one reason: The former silent film star Ossi Oswalda , who made his last screen appearance here in 1933, can be seen in a further leading role . The artist then emigrated to Czechoslovakia due to the new political circumstances in Germany.

criticism
In the Austrian Film-Zeitung it was said: “… a cleverly made UFA film that successfully combines the elements of the adventure film with those of the girl trafficking film. (...) The choice of the milieu turned out to be very successful. (...) Alfred Zeisler filled the film with an exciting atmosphere ”.
