The Dance with the Devil - The Abduction of Richard Oetker is a television crime film on the private broadcaster Sat.1 from 2001 , based on a true story.
Historical background / cinematic plot
On December 14, 1976 , the 25-year-old student Richard Oetker was kidnapped in the parking lot of his university in Freising . The martyrdom lasted 47 hours - cooped up in a wooden box, seriously injured from the effects of an electric shock. In the meantime, the kidnapper extorted almost DM 21 million from the victim's wealthy family and was able to flee. Oetker is released in a forest near Munich .
The police and the public prosecutor's office investigate for two years until they arrest the alleged kidnapper, the car mechanic Dieter Zlof , called Dieter Cilov in the film, and bring him to court. Here Cilov denies the act, but the court sentenced him to 15 years in prison. But one question still remains: Where is the ransom? The head of the special commission at the LKA , Helmut Bauer (in the film Georg Kufbach), continues to investigate.

The reconstructed crime could be filmed in detail by providing Dieter Zlof with important background information, for which he received an unknown sum of money.
The victim Richard Oetker, who still suffers from severe physical impairment, had repeatedly spoken out against the filming of his martyrdom. Nevertheless, Richard Oetker agreed to have his story filmed in order to forestall a film that the kidnapper had planned.
In order to protect the personal rights of those involved, the names of the perpetrator and investigator, i.e. Dieter Zlof and Helmut Bauer, were changed, but not the name of the victim.
The film was one of the most successful films from German production in 2001.
