The magic fish (original title: russisch По щучьему велению , Po schtschutschemu weleniju ) is a Soviet fairy tale film by Alexander Rou from 1938 based on four Russian folk tales.
action
In the dead of winter, the poor farmer's son Jemeljej cannot cut wood and then drive back to his mother's hut, because the tsar 's last horse was taken from him. So he goes to draw water, where he catches a talking magician , whose life he spares. Out of gratitude, the magic fish promises him that all his wishes will come true.
Meanwhile, the tsar sends his heralds in all four directions to find a man who can make his always bad-tempered tsarevna laugh. To this man he would give her to wife. One of the heralds meets Jemeljej and watches him as he wishes the sledge loaded with wood to drive home on its own without a draft horse. He demands that Jemeljej accompany him to the tsar, but the latter refuses - the tsar should come to him instead.
So far, none of the suitors at the Tsar's court has managed to make the Tsarevna laugh, when the herald returns and tells his master about the miracle he saw. The Tsar immediately sent his general and some soldiers to have Jemeljej fetched. The unwilling first forces her to dance with a wish, but then declares she is ready to go to the court of the tsars. Followed by the soldiers, he drives through the country singing and making music on a stove and, when he arrives at court, makes the Tsarevna dance and laugh with his games. The tsar, however, refuses to give his daughter to the farmer's son, whereupon Jemeljej and the tsarevna leave the farm. The tsar angrily orders his soldiers to pursue Jemeljej and bring him back to the court, dead or alive.
The two newly in love manage to shake off their persecutors and they found a new settlement in a distant place together with Jemeljej's mother and honest people. The magic fish says goodbye to Jemeljej there.
