action

The unemployed Hinrich Lobek spends his days at home in Berlin and sees himself as a victim of reunification . His wife, who works as an architect at Potsdamer Platz , loses patience over time.

After a while, he decides to go to the employment office, where he gets a job as a sales representative for the Panta Rhein company. On his first day at work he accompanies the loyal employee Uwe Strüwer through the dreary prefabricated housing estate . The two of them are unsuccessful in selling the “Jona” indoor fountain model.

The calm Lobek recalls his old strengths and builds a new model - Atlantis, a fountain from which the Berlin TV tower rises on an outline of the GDR. The "Ossi" unexpectedly becomes a business genius with opportunities for advancement. But his marriage to his wife is slowly falling apart, and to make matters worse, she has a new suitor. It is her work colleague Thomas Hamann.

criticism

The Lexicon of International Films wrote:

“After years of unemployment, a former GDR apartment manager retrains to become a sales representative and creates an“ Ostalgischen ”indoor fountain that becomes a bestseller while his marriage gradually seems to fail. A comedy about German-German sensitivities, which is not exactly visually powerful, but precisely staged, supported by playful actors and a good script, which throws a biting, ironic look back into the present. "

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden gave the film the rating of particularly valuable :

“With a fine feeling, keeping the balance between a serious background and cheerful echoes, Timm proves his ability to stage safely and to lead actors. An excellent script based on the novel by Jens Sparschuh was the basis for a film that offers a wealth of charming quotes in dialogues and accompanying music. Timm's view of the people in his story is ironic, but not sarcastic, melancholy, but not provided with false romanticism. He allows your nostalgic feelings, he does not disavow them.

The accurate selection and equipment of the locations, an observing camera and a coherent musical accompaniment, enriched with classics of GDR pop music, are further pluses of this film. "
