The teacher Gustav Kilian thinks nothing of tests and grades and therefore often has a dispute with the school director Dr. Lovage. It is all the more astonishing that four students from the Kaspar Hauser Comprehensive School take the first four places in a new PISA test. In addition, these four also come from Gustav Kilian's class. Mahmut, Francoise, Gloria and Igor are "the best students in the world"!
Nobody expected that. Nobody could count on that either - because the four don't fit into the picture of model students at all. On the contrary. Igor is difficult to raise, Gloria is highly explosive, Mahmut wants to leave Germany, and only Francoise corresponds halfway to the image of a committed student.
Gustav Kilian, suddenly “the best teacher in the world”, in whose class all four top students sit, is the opposite of a super educator. You get to know him as an involuntarily funny, nervous-unsuccessful man who still lives in his parents' villa and is thoroughly fed up with the life of a teacher. The students like him because they know he will take care of them, but his classes are turbulent.
But politics, represented by Friederike Schelle ( Natalia Wörner ), an ambitious ministerial official, wants to make the "Kaspar Hauser successful model" a role model for Germany. Kilian refuses this plan, but the students join in and things take their course. While the “best students in the world” go their own way, Kilian is even offered the office of national education officer. But not everyone allows him to be successful. His colleague Dr. Schütze-Lopez (Oscar Ortega Sanchez) is researching behind his back: While Ms. Schelle and the education minister are planning a major campaign with the “best teacher in the world”, a newspaper report appears in which Kilian is accused of having premature access to PISA -Studies his students groomed.
But the students find some precarious pictures on which the colleague Dr. Sagittarius-Lopez can be seen taking drugs at a party. Thereupon Kilian blackmailed Schütze-Lopez and thus prevented the matter from getting completely out of hand. Although Kilian could take up the position of the National Education Officer in Berlin towards the end of the film, he does not accept it because his relationship with Trixi has only just "rebalanced" and he does not want to leave it.
