The best papa in the world (working title: Mitten in mein Leben ) is an Austrian television film from 2019 by Sascha Bigler with Oliver Mommsen , Hilde Dalik , Eva Herzig , Doris Schretzmayer , Philipp Hochmair and Hary Prinz . The tragic comedy was shown for the first time on ORF on May 1, 2019. The premiere in the first was on December 13 of 2019.

Clemens Hoffman is a freedom-loving surgeon who is used to success. In order to recover from the stressful everyday clinical routine, he plans to sail around the world. The succession has already been arranged and the suitcases are packed when he learns that his sister Doro has died in an accident. Doro was a single parent and, in addition to debts, also leaves behind her three children Kristina, Benny and Judy. Her last wish was that Clemens should take care of his nephew and the two nieces.

Clemens therefore takes in the pubescent blogger Kristina, the introverted Benny and the cleverly smart Judy, whereby the situation turns his professional and private life upside down and his love relationship with long-term friend Susa is exposed to turbulence. The freedom-loving egomaniac has to learn to be considerate and responsible for the good of the children, repeatedly reaches his limits and occasionally fails in his new tasks. Doro's sister-in-law Karin Donnersberg and her husband Arthur would be interested in adopting the children. Clemens, however, is reluctant to leave the children to these, in his view, heartless people.

He grows with his challenges and over time develops into a person who is in the middle of real life. The children gradually conquer his heart and Clemens goes from being a freedom-loving single to a father who tries to do his best to offer the children a loving home.

The shooting took place from July 2nd to 31st, 2018 in Lower Austria . The filming locations were Krems an der Donau / Stein an der Donau , Mautern an der Donau and Weißenkirchen in the Wachau .

The film was produced by Mona Film , with Austrian radio and ARD ( ARD Degeto ) involved, and the production was supported by the state of Lower Austria and the Austrian television fund.

Thomas Szabolcs was responsible for the sound, Hubert Klausner for the production design, Christine Ludwig for the costumes and Martin Geisler and Ines Steininger for the mask.

Reviews

Eric Leimann found in the Weser Kurier that the tragic comedy offered beautiful moments despite its sometimes somewhat clichéd plot. Oliver Mommsen would convincingly fill in the development from boyish careerist and independence fanatic to loving surrogate father. The film, made with a slight tendency towards Austrian “ humiliation ”, is particularly touching when your hero gets into dire straits and the mask of “easy going” threatens to fall as a principle of life.

Tilmann P. Gangloff from tittelbach.tv wrote that the script looked like a combination of many well-known set pieces, but the author put them together cleverly and very entertainingly. The television film is particularly worth seeing because of the ensemble.

Audience rating

In Germany, 4.83 million people saw the film when it was first broadcast; the market share was 16.8 percent.
