For the 1922/23 season, the ATSB district of Bavaria was divided into the two districts of Northern Bavaria and Southern Bavaria, so that the number of participating ATSB district champions rose from 15 to 16. The 16 district champions determined the participants in the final round in four regional finals. The game was played in a knockout system .
The ATSV Rheinau protested against the rating of the game because a penalty was not given. A replay was scheduled for which BSC Munich did not play. Rheinau was then declared the southern German association champion and moved into the semi-finals of the German championship.
In the run-up to the final, the Märkische Spielvereinigung protested against the short-term relocation of the game from the originally planned venue Berlin to Leipzig, as it saw this as a disadvantage for its representative Alemannia 22 Berlin. The Berliners still competed. After the game, both clubs agreed on a second leg in Berlin, which was not counted as a championship game.
