The moraine landscape is now part of the Devin Peninsula Nature Reserve .

history

Early days

People lived in this area as early as the Neolithic , which is attested by finds of Stone Age tools. From the 4th to the 6th centuries, Slavs came here.

The Slavs who once settled here called the lake Tiva , which means body of water . This lake gave the village of Devin its name.

Middle Ages to modern times

The place at the gates of Stralsund was first mentioned in a document in 1273. In 1303 Stralsund's mayor Gerwin von Semlow acquired parts of Devin, and from 1317 he owned the entire place. The Prince Wizlaw III. von Rügen , who had held a court in Devin since 1314, then granted the place the privilege of being a Stralsund town village.

In March 1314 Prince Wizlaw II of Rügen made peace with his city of Stralsund and gave it all the rights and freedoms that the city of Rostock had received from Borwin (Prince of Mecklenburg) and his sons Heinrich and Nicolaus, as well as "the whole eghendom" about the city and everyone within its borders. A few years later, in May 1321, Prince Wizlaw III confirmed . the city of Stralsund their privileges and their possessions in the villages of Devin, Teschenhagen, Zitterpenningshagen , Voigdehagen , Wendorf , Lüdershagen , Vogelsang, Lüssow , Langendorf and Kedingshagen. The privileges are the same as in previous confirmations.

In the middle of the 17th century parts of Devin came into the possession of the Stralsund Heilgeisthospital , for which it paid 3000 guilders. The other part belonged to Colonel Christoffer Johann Stephan von Brunell on Engelswacht , who came from Ueckermünde . After his death in 1657, the state commissioner Martin von Klinckowström bought his property, but sold it to the Heilgeisthospital in 1696. At the end of the 17th century, the children of the deceased Adjudant General Johann Steffen von Brunell, as the owners of the Engelswacht estate, filed a lawsuit against the Heilgeistkloster because of the lease payments and services from Devin to which they were entitled.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the Strömer brought a lawsuit against the Viermänner and Maters (submerged net fishermen) because of the forbidden herring fishing on the sandy spot (headland near Devin). Due to the proximity to the Strelasund , Devin was very much influenced by fishing .

19th century

In 1807, French troops and parts of the Swedish 4th Brigade fought each other in the village, killing three French. The French ruled the entire area until 1810. A brickworks built in 1803 ceased operations after the First World War . Between 1817 and 1829 the road to Voigdehagen was improved, the Voigdehagen and Devin estates continued to participate in the improvement of the Barther Landstrasse, the renewal of the Grimmer Landstrasse from Voigdehagen to Wendorf and the planting of trees on the rural roads. In 1825 a contract was signed between the farmer Hans Christian Hagemann and his stepson Johann Jacob Kronsfoth for the sale of a Katens in Devin, including its inventory. A short time later, in 1828, a lease fishery was established in Devin and leased to Johann Heinrich Peuss and Friedrich Peuss from 1827 to 1862.

In the years 1839 to 1843 the Devin estate was reallocated for a new lease, as well as the sale of superfluous buildings and liquidations with the farmers. At the same time (between 1840 and 1850) the new farm in Devin was built and the bakery and pig house built by the tenant Adolf Rühs were purchased . It was also the time in Devin, when the most active building activity in the 19th century can be demonstrated for the place. In 1846 a new school building was built in the village, and a sink well was built on the site. Between 1856 and 1870 part of the field marrow of the Devin estate was drained.

On July 21, 1887, the Kurhaus in the village was inaugurated and opened. The Kurhaus still exists today and is one of the sights in the Devin district. A short time later, in 1900, the Kurhaus had to be repaired again. At the same time, the park and the bathing establishment were repaired.

20th century

Since the beginning of the 20th century, Stralsunders have been increasingly recovering in the village on the Strelasund with its bathing establishment , the park and the Kurhaus . On October 1, 1928, the village was incorporated into Stralsund. The incorporation also affected the villages of Grünhufe, Langendorf, Andershof, Lüssow and Voigdehagen .

The Deviner School was connected to the electrical power grid from 1930 to 1932. Around the same time, this also affected the school in Voigdehagen .

Between 1938 and 1943 the Kurhaus in Devin was redesigned, and a new public air raid shelter was built on the school property in the Devin district.

Until 1945 the farms and lands were administered by the Holy Spirit Monastery in Stralsund. The tenants managed the farms and goods in the village and the surrounding area. From 1945 there was a land reform in the former Soviet zone of occupation. In the course of this reform, the tenants were expropriated and often also driven out. The lands were later assigned to the so-called agricultural production cooperatives, which then continued to administer them. During the GDR era, the building structure deteriorated. In 1956 the Kurhaus Devin, the last owner of which was Bruno Röpke, was handed over to the HO restaurants. It only came back into private hands after the fall of the Wall .

In the winter of 1978/79, Devin was cut off from the outside world for five days by masses of snow. The extreme winter came very suddenly and swept across northern Germany.

1995 saw the construction of a new residential complex with a view of the Sund in Devin. In 2007 the beach section in Devin was renewed. In 2011 the pier in Devin was ceremoniously handed over.

  1. City documents: Prince Wizlaw III. von Rügen makes peace with his city of Stralsund and gives it all the rights and freedoms that the city of Rostock received from Borwin (Prince of Mecklenburg) and his sons Heinrich and Nicolaus, as well as "the whole eghendom" over the city and everyone within its borders . The border to land begins at the border of Voigdehagen from this to that of Lüdershagen, from there to that of Vogelsang and to that of Lüssow; from this to that of Langendorf, to that of Gerbodenhagen, to that of Kedingshagen and to the Baltic Sea. The limit of the solten waters is: from Nyen Owe to the end of Gellens, to the end of Ummanz, from there to Bessin, from Bessin to the Brezenitz brook with the lake at Devin and Dänholm, back to Nyen Owe. Within this limit of the water, the city and its men and residents have fishing in common, furthermore it gives the city the right to bring complaints against the citizens before the bailiff and the councilors, and all other lands, "de se hebbet", and that they "ere Bescholdene ordele voren unde bring to Lubeke". For this, the city gives him 6000 Slavic marks and the duty that it had bought for 5000 marks. The tariff should not be increased. The councilors use their oaths to decide disputes over customs. The prince's men maintain their rights which they have had from old age. This should settle all quarrels. Ed .: Wizlaw III., Prince of Rügen. StU 0121. Stralsund March 1, 1314.
