occupation

The woman behind the wall is a German film drama by director Grzegorz Muskala from 2013. The storyline of the psychological thriller thematizes the classic motif of femme fatale , embedded in a crime story.

action

The young, shy student Martin searches for accommodation in Berlin and finds it in a neglected apartment. It contains the utensils and furniture of his previous tenant Robert. The mediation is handled by the caretaker and only comes about after he has sent a photo of Martin to the landlady.

While rummaging through the apartment, Martin finds Robert's personal items. A telephone number left behind leads him to the pensioner Schaffrat. His landlady Simone and her husband Sebastian live in the freely viewable apartment opposite. Martin finds a stethoscope and uses it to listen to walls. At a meeting to sign the rental agreement, Martin is seduced by Simone. He is seized by increasing curiosity.

Martin has an affair with the artist Simone, whose husband Sebastian reacts jealously and aggressively. Martin runs errands for Ms. Schaffrat. In the course of the story, Martin repeatedly comes across the name Robert. Although he cannot find out any details, he suspects that Simone also had an affair with Robert.

Finally, Martin discovers a concrete block in the neighboring apartment in which Sebastian's body is embedded. Simone then tries to kill Martin.

production

The woman behind the wall was made as a graduation film at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB). In addition to the production company One Two Films, the DFFB and ZDF were involved in the production. The shooting took place from April 9th to May 17th, 2013 in Berlin. The ZDF showed the film for the first time on March 18, 2014 in the series hour of evil from the editorial team Das kleine Fernsehspiel .

criticism

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung comments, “Grzegorz Muskala… uses two Hitchcock elements in his feature film debut : the window to the courtyard through which Martin watches his rivals in the apartment, and the shower scene from Psycho , which is modified here. There are also borrowings from Francis Ford Coppola's eavesdropping thriller The Dialog , and the chamber in this game is as threatening as it is in David Lynch ”.

The woman behind the wall premiered on September 15, 2013 as a competition entry at the Oldenburg International Film Festival and was shown at other German and international festivals. At the 24th Kinofest Lünen , the composer Conrad Oleak won the award for the best film music. The international premiere was at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2013.
