Career

society

Diego Valdés, born in Santiago de Chile , comes from the youth department of Audax Italiano . After playing regularly in the reserve team in the 2012 season, he was promoted to the first team during the 2012 Clausura. On September 15, 2012 (10th matchday of Clausura) he made his debut in the 0-1 away defeat against CD Universidad Católica in the top Chilean league when he was substituted on in the 77th minute for Mauricio Arias . By the end of the season he was used in four other league games. In the Transición 2013 - the transition season due to the change to the European system - he already played seven league games.

On November 30, 2013 (16th matchday) he scored his first league goal in a 2-0 home win against Rangers de Talca . In this 2013/14 season he played 22 league games, in which he scored two goals. The attacking midfielder had his final breakthrough in the 2014/15 season, in which he developed into an undisputed regular player. In the last five games of Apertura 2014 he scored five goals and prepared three more goals. During the entire season he played 31 league games, in which he was able to record seven goals. In the next 2015/16 season he scored six goals in 32 league appearances.

On July 1, 2016, Valdés moved to the Mexican first division club Monarcas Morelia for a transfer fee of two million US dollars . On July 16, 2016 (1st matchday of Apertura) he made his debut in the 2-0 away defeat against Club Tijuana for his new club. On the next match day, he scored for the first time in a 2-2 draw against Querétaro FC . He quickly developed into a regular player in the Canarios jersey . In his first season in 2016/17 , he made 35 league games in which he scored three goals and four assists. In the next season 2017/18 he played 39 league games, in which he scored seven goals and five assists. By the turn of the year, he had made 16 league appearances in the following season 2018/19 , in which he was able to collect two goals and three assists.

On January 1, 2019, Valdés moved to league rival Santos Laguna . On January 6, 2019 (1st matchday of Clausura) he made his debut in the 2-0 away defeat against Lobos de la BUAP for the Guerreros . National team

On January 29, 2015, Diego Valdés made his debut in a 3-2 friendly win over the United States in the Chilean national team . He was only part of the squad again from March 2018, but from that point on he played regularly for La Roja . On June 8, 2018, he scored his first international goal in a 2-2 draw against Poland .

In June 2019 he was called up by Reinaldo Rueda to join the Chilean squad for the 2019 Copa America . At the tournament he was not used in any game.

Racism gossip

On September 10, 2018, the day before a test match against the South Korean national team at Suwon Stadium, Diego Valdés reviled the eyes of Asian opponents in a public appearance. His gesture attracted international media attention and, following the incident of Colombian player Edwin Cardona in November 2017, who defeated South Korean captain Ki Sung-yong in a similar manner during an international match , was the second racism incident by a South American player in a short time. In response, Valdés posted an apology on social media and posed with a South Korean fan before the game. This was seen as completely inadequate, especially in South Korea. Valdés was in the following game for the full duration of the game.

In the aftermath, Valdés was not punished by FIFA for his behavior, while Edwin Cardona was suspended for five international matches the year before.
