Dierk Schmidt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dierk Schmidt (* 1965 in Unna ) is a German artist who primarily uses painting , drawing and semiotics . The theme of his most important works is the critical preoccupation with history and the depiction of history .

Life

Dierk Schmidt studied art history and philosophy at the University of Bonn from 1984 to 1986 . In 1987 he switched to art studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , which he completed in 1992 as a master student of Prof. Hüppi . From 1996 to 1997 he studied at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam .

Since then Schmidt has been working as a freelance artist, but also writes for the art magazine springerin . In his painting works and installations he deals with the critical definition and expansion of the history picture, both in the sense of the artistic meaning of the word ( history painting ) and in the sense of ideas about history ( history picture ). He often uses PVC and mirror film as image carriers, whereby his painterly expression is more graphic, on the other hand he also paints realistically expressive in oil. His best-known work, entitled The Division of the Earth , deals with colonial history, especially the Berlin Africa Conference . The work was shown at Documenta in 2007 .

Schmidt lives and works in Berlin .
