Dietfried Bernet (born May 14, 1940 in Vienna ; † May 23, 2011 in Hohenems , Vorarlberg ) was an Austrian conductor and author .

Life

Dietfried Bernet studied in Vienna with Hans Swarowsky and Dimitri Mitropoulos , conducted his first concerts at the Wiener Musikverein at the age of 18 and won 1st prize at the International Conducting Competition in Liverpool at the age of 22. At the age of 23 he conducted Verdi's La traviata at the Spoleto Festival (director: Luchino Visconti ), at the age of 24 he was conductor at the Vienna Volksoper , at the age of 26 conductor at the Vienna State Opera , and at the age of 34 general music director of the city of Mainz . From 1995 to 2000 he was guest chief conductor at the Royal Copenhagen Opera House.

Dietfried Bernet is a composer with a work published by Universal-Edition, for the Bärenreiter Verlag he translated the Czech opera Julietta by Bohuslav Martinů into German together with Aleš Březina and is the author of the book Arguments for the gentleman in tails: What you already always wanted to know about conducting.

Bernet had been a member of the Equality Lodge since 1970 and a founding member of the Zur Truth Lodge in 1974 .
