The La Jalca district is located in the Chachapoyas province of the Amazonas region in northern Peru . The district area is 125 km². The population was 3978 at the 2017 census. In 1993 it was 5397, in 2007 it was 5344.

Where La Jalca is located, the city of Chachapoyas was to be built first, but was then built further north because of the better climatic conditions. Long before the Spanish colonization, La Jalca was the site of a settlement of the Chachapoya culture , whose round buildings can still be found around La Jalca today. There is also a museum in La Jalca, in which you can not only find various archaeological objects, but also some explanations about traditional agriculture.

Traditionally, Chachapoyas-Quechua is spoken in La Jalca , but Spanish is now predominant.
