The Mórrope district is located in the Lambayeque Province in the Lambayeque region in northwestern Peru . The district was founded on February 12, 1821. It has an area of 1057.66 km². In the 2017 census, 48,209 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 29,902, in 2007 39,174. The district administration is located in the 16 m high small town of Mórrope with 8,680 inhabitants (as of 2017). The city of Mórrope is located 21 km northwest of the provincial capital Lambayeque on the road from Lambayeque to Piura .
Geographical location
The Mórrope district is located on the Pacific coast in the west of the Lambayeque province. It has an approximately 65 km long stretch of coast by the sea. The estuary lagoon of the Río La Leche lies in the district. The landscape consists mostly of desert. The national road 1N ( Panamericana ) crosses the district in a north-westerly direction.
The Mórrope district borders on the Olmos district to the north, the Pacora , Túcume and Mochumí districts to the east and the Lambayeque district to the south .
Localities
In addition to the main town of Mórrope, there are four larger towns (centros poblados) in the district:
- Cruz del Medano (3710 inhabitants)
- El Romero (1058 inhabitants)
- La Colorada (1270 inhabitants)
- Los Pósitos (879 inhabitants)
There are also 36 smaller villages (caseríos) in the district.
