The Motupe District is located in the Lambayeque Province in the Lambayeque Region in northwestern Peru . The district founded on October 11, 1909 has an area of 557.37 km². At the 2017 census, 29,836 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 20,738, in 2007 24,011. The district administration is located in the 130 m high town of Motupe with 16,275 inhabitants (as of 2017). Motupe is located 70 km north-northeast of the regional capital Chiclayo on the road from Lambayeque to Olmos .
Geographical location
The Motupe district is located in the north of the Lambayeque province on the edge of the coastal lowlands. The Río Motupe and Río Chotoque flow through the district in a predominantly southwestern direction. The foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera rise to the west, north and east . Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the lowlands of the district.
The Motupe district borders in the northwest on the Olmos district , in the northeast and in the southeast on the Salas district , in the central east on the Chóchope district and in the south on the Jayanca district .
