Dominik Balkow (born September 7, 1988 in West Berlin ) is a German music video and film director .
Career
The beginnings (2009-2014)
After graduating from high school (2009), Dominik Balkow began his directing career with his first small music video assignments for Nina Hagen and other artists.
In 2012 he completed his studies in "film directing " with the short film Seebestattung (directing & screenplay).
In the same year he directed four music videos for the rapper Kontra K as well as videos for musicians like the rock band Haudegen , the rapper Bahar or the songwriter Christian Haase .
His first international music video "Toast to Freedom" followed in 2013 in cooperation with Amnesty International . The song was a collaboration of the punk bands Anti-Flag with the Donots and with members of Billy Talent and the Beatsteaks .
In the same year Balkow met the rock musician Remo and began to work as a director and editor on the music video feature film Heaven in the Head - Remo: The Film . The feature film, shot in Berlin, Brandenburg and Los Angeles , was released in stores across Germany via Universal Music in August 2014 . The DVD was advertised intensively for two months on various RTL group TV channels , with a commercial also staged by Balkow .
Balkow has been a member of the Bundesverband Regie (BVR) since 2014 .
Currently (since 2015)
In 2015, Balkow made his second short film Living on American Dream in Florida . A few months later, in close collaboration with Jeanette Biedermann, a music video entitled "A Gift" was created for her band Ewig .
In 2016, among other things, a music video for the band Elaiza followed . In the music video for the single "Hurricane", based on the childhood of front woman Ela, attention is drawn to the taboo topic of domestic violence .
In 2017 and 2018 Balkow made several concert films and TV spots for The Dark Tenor and Unheilig . During that time he also edited the US documentary Too Macabre about the genesis of the 30-year-old cult film Elvira, Mistress of the Dark and supervised the post-production.
