Doneil Henry (born April 20, 1993 in Brampton, Ontario ) is a Canadian football player . He played for the Canadian national soccer team for the first time in 2012 .
Career
society
Doneil Henry started with the Brampton Bullets at the age of ten and continued to play for North Mississauga before moving to Toronto FC's youth academy in November 2008 . There he led the academy team in 2009 and 2010 as team captain, but failed to win the Canadian Soccer League in both seasons . In the 2010 season he made his debut for the professional team against the Vancouver Whitecaps and in the qualifying game for the CONCACAF Champions League against the Honduran club CD Motagua . In addition, Henry was used in the friendly against the Bolton Wanderers . On August 26, 2010, he signed a professional contract with Toronto FC, becoming the first player in the academy, founded in 2008, to receive such a contract. After he had already made a name for himself in the 2011 MLS season , he scored his first Major League Soccer goal against Real Salt Lake on April 28, 2012 to equalize 2-2. However, the game was lost 3-2 due to a goal conceded in stoppage time. On August 21, Henry extended his long-term contract. He prepared for the 2014 season at the Premier League club West Ham United and made a good impression there. On May 31, 2014, he scored his last goal for Toronto in the 3-2 win over Columbus Crew , where he scored the decisive goal in the second minute of stoppage time.
In October 2014 it was announced that Henry had already been sold to the Cypriot club Apollon Limassol in April 2014 , but will still play the rest of the 2014 season on loan for Toronto. He played his last game for Toronto on October 26, losing to New England Revolution (0-1). Overall, Henry won the Canadian Championship three times with Toronto (2010, 2011, 2012).
After Henry failed to play at Apollon Limassol and completed several training sessions at West Ham United, the Hammers signed the young Canadian on January 3, 2015 on the recommendation of ex-Toronto coach Ryan Nelsen . In the first two months he did not play a competitive game for West Ham, so he was loaned to the second division Blackburn Rovers for a month in March . On March 4, he made his debut in English professional football in the away win at Sheffield Wednesday (2-1) and impressed his coach Gary Bowyer with his performance right away. In his second assignment, he prepared the late 1-0 winner by Jordan Rhodes against the Bolton Wanderers . But in his third game for Blackburn, Henry seriously injured his thigh, which meant the end of the season and the end of the loan period.
National team
Henry initially played for the Canadian U-20 national soccer team from 2010 to 2013 and made six international appearances.
In March 2012 he was nominated to the squad for the U-23 qualifying tournament as part of the 2012 Summer Olympics . After Henry did not appear in the first group game against El Salvador (0-0), he scored the 1-0 opening goal (2-0) in the second game against the USA . A 1: 1 in the last group game against Cuba was enough to reach the knockout round, but where they failed with 1: 3 at the eventual tournament winner Mexico .
On August 15, 2012, he made his A international debut in a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago (2-0), and was substituted for Pedro Pacheco in the second half . In December 2012, Henry was voted the best U-20 player in Canada of 2012 with 37.8%, just ahead of Samuel Piette (35.4%). In June 2013 he was a member of the 23-man squad that was the last to be eliminated from the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2013 in the group stage with just one point.
