The village church Bennstedt is a listed Protestant choir tower church in the Bennstedt district of the unified community of Salzatal in Saxony-Anhalt . In the local register of monuments it is listed as a monument under registration number 094 55038 . It belongs to the parish area Teutschenthal in Kirchenkreis Halle Saale district of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

The patronage of the church, first mentioned in 1298, is no longer known today. In 1522 the Mansfeld counts Hans von Trotha on Seeburg , called Hans the Younger, enfeoffed the village of Bennstedt. In the time after the violent death of the Lutheran preacher Georg Winckler in 1527, the church was visited by the citizens of Halle until Cardinal Albrecht banned services in the surrounding area in order to attend the Lutheran services here.

In 1657 the marshals von Bieberstein Bennstedt bought von Trothas. On April 20, 1681 a fire disaster occurred in Bennstedt, to which the church and large parts of the village fell victim. The renovation of the nave with the western crypt annex was commissioned in 1682 by the patron saint of the church, the Princely Saxon court master Joachim Wilhelm Marschall von Bieberstein (1627–1691). The annex on the north side with the patronage box and the Bieberstein coat of arms on it also dates from this year . In 1781 and 1971, the gallery, which was originally decorated with Old and New Testament images, was restored .

In 2003 a support association was founded with the aim of renovating the church. In 2007 reconstruction work took place on the tower; the slate roof with the tower clock from the 19th century was also restored.

Architecture and equipment

The church is a single-nave aisle church , mainly made of field stones , with a square choir tower in the east. The sound arcades in the choir tower point to the Romanesque period. The core of the building dates from the first half of the 13th century, with the choir being changed in the 14th century. On the south side there is a portal that refers to the late Gothic period . After the fire in 1681 it was rebuilt in baroque style, the nave was widened and lengthened in the north by an extension. The crypt annex adjoins to the west, which is accessed via the north side. The crypt contains two magnificent sarcophagi and five baroque tombstones of the von Bieberstein family as well as six tombstone slabs of the Koch family. The two magnificent sarcophagi belong to Christian Marschall von Bieberstein (1662–1721) and his wife Gertrud Sophie (1674–1745).

The baroque interior of the church is determined by three parts in particular: the altar , about six meters high and two and a half meters wide , the epitaph Joachim Wilhelm's Marschall von Bieberstein (1627–1691), the owner of Bennstedt, and his wife Armgard, née Hahn auf Seeburg (1628–1684 ) and the epitaph of Alexander Haubold's Marschall von Bieberstein (1632–1695), the owner of Halle's Marktschlösschen , with his wife Christina Sybilla née von Stange (1651–1691).

The altar, made of white, gold and ocher, is divided into three superimposed scenes from the life of Jesus Christ , the Lord's Supper in the Predella , the Crucifixion and the Resurrection . The baroque candelabras are a rarity in the church , as such items of furniture are often a victim of theft.

The polygonal pulpit, two choir boxes with tendrils and the horseshoe-shaped gallery also date from the period of renovation after the fire. The lead glass windows of the patron s lodge were restored in 2007.

The organ , one of the oldest functioning organs in the Saalekreis , was made in 1775 in the workshop of Johann Christoph Zuberbier .
