History and architecture

In the years 1879 and 1880 a neo-Gothic brick church was built in Meilendorf . The single-aisle church has a transept and a narrow west tower , the top of which has been poorly repaired.

It is probably the fourth church at this point. A first building is assumed to be from the late Romanesque era and is said to have been replaced by a new building around 1400, although it remains unclear whether this affected the entire church , which is rather untypical for small villages at this time. The new building is presumed to be based on a coin find that was made when the church was rebuilt in 1717. This became necessary after the village was burned down in the Thirty Years War in 1644 and almost completely abandoned. The baroque church from 1717, donated by Prince Leopold , was already in disrepair in 1752, its organ from 1800 had to be renewed in 1860. However, the baroque church was only demolished in 1882. It was therefore obviously not in the same place as the current building. Rather, like its predecessors, it was in the cemetery . The lintel of the baroque church, including founder inscription is first turned on in this cemetery, later he came into the garden of the bailiff .

The roof of today's building was initially covered with an English slate roof on battens, but was rebuilt in 1905 in Rhenish slate on formwork. During the Second World War , the church was damaged in fighting on April 15, 1945, just a few days before the end of the war. The church has belonged to the Meilendorf community since 1992. The church is currently (December 2017) in ruins. The place belongs to the parish of Quellendorf in the Dessau parish of the Evangelical Church of Anhalt .

Interior and outfit

The south transept was separated by a wooden wall with glass windows. In the west is the organ gallery , in the choir the altar block. The baptismal font was loaned to the church in Quellendorf, and a bell from the 14th century hangs in the bell tower .

  7. Haetge / Harksen, pp. 221–222. According to them, the baptismal font was donated by the Kahlin family shortly after 1700, but according to the city's website it dates from the 13th century. But this could mean the older baptismal font remnant, which Haetge / Harksen, p. 222, mention in the baker's garden. The whereabouts of the Lord's Supper (18th century) cannot be found in the literature.
