Young three-legged runners

The Three-legged race was already in the Middle Ages as a game familiar and is a traditional sport of the late 19th and early 20th century, which nowadays as athletics running exercise in the area of physical education and especially as a race game of children is known. If there are two participants standing next to each other, the adjacent leg is tied together in the lower leg area so that they together form a "three-legged being". The pairs formed in this way try to be the first to reach the finish line in a race over a short distance.

history

In the Middle Ages, three-legged running was one of the games with which children - who at that time were often considered to be able to work from the age of six - were prepared in a playful way for the working world of adults . Three-legged running also has a long tradition as a competition : At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, when tug-of-war was still an Olympic discipline , for example , three-legged running was considered a serious sport.

A world record in the 100-meter three-leg run was set in 1896 by the German runners Ernst Schultze and Emil Wernicke from Berlin's FC Germania 88 , who needed a time of 12.8 seconds for the distance. Harry L. Hillman and Lawson Robertson (USA) were even faster on November 17, 1906, taking only 12.6 seconds over the slightly longer 110-yard distance. The fact that both of them were Olympic medalists shows that three-legged running was definitely done by serious athletes at the time.

Nowadays, the historical run is occasionally carried out as part of sports festivals, etc., whereby in addition to the competitive nature of the "competition of three-legged beings" partly also serves as a contribution to the entertainment program. For example, a 100-meter three-legged run was started in 2004 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Berlin Athletics Association .

In the context of exercises in athletic movement sequences , the three-legged walk is one of the historical forms of athletics in school sports. As a running and coordination exercise, it is still important today in playful runs and running games in school sports lessons . In addition, the three-legged runner is a "classic" part of the standard repertoire of school sports festivals and days. In disabled sports , it is used for exercises with a partner, such as the trampoline gymnastics for disabled people, which is often offered due to its high therapeutic effect .

The three-legged run is known and popular nowadays, especially at children's parties of all kinds, as well as at children's and youth camps and stays in school camps and holiday camps, etc. In addition, it is a popular party game and is also used at events with a "hands-on character" such as company - , citizen, street and game festivals etc., often offered for all age groups.

Preparation and accessories

There is little preparation. The lower legs of the runners standing shoulder to shoulder next to each other are tied together, mostly just above the ankle area, sometimes a second time in the shin area.

Sections of ropes , thick cords or strips of fabric are suitable as "foot ties" . The latter are recommended because of the lower risk of injury, which is why Velcro strips are sometimes used. When running, the two runners hook their neighboring arms into each other and can thus support each other.

The track is marked every locale with the most simple means and staked.

Teammates and rules

Normally, every two runners or players form a pair, a "three-legged being". In order to be able to lead a competition of two pairs against each other, at least four runners or teammates are required. The total number of participants is arbitrarily high, whereby two or more teams can compete against each other, each consisting of an equal number of two-person teams.

Since there is an increased risk of accidents if you fall, fall over or twist your ankle, three-legged enemies are only suitable for people aged 10 and over. With sufficient guidance and supervision, however, it can also be carried out by younger age groups, then mostly over shorter distances and on a surface with a lower risk of injury and accidents , such as lawns .

Distances of around 50 meters are common, and the historical distance of 100 meters is sometimes also carried out. Children's competition games last about three minutes; at sporting discharge of Three-legged race -Wettkämpfen arise depending on the distance shorter durations. The faster - and usually more skilled - team wins. In the three-legged walk, it is particularly important that the two participants coordinate their movement and show consideration for their partner. The slower person determines the speed.

Competition and game variants

Variation as an "obstacle course" on a course marked with a plastic hat (at a company party in Doral, Florida, USA, 2007).

As a competition or running game, three-legged running is carried out in a straight line over the desired distance, usually as a race between the teams. Sometimes the times are also stopped, for example at game and sports festivals with individual stations. As a modification of the competition or game, more than two people can be tied together in a chain.

The three-legged run can be combined with other running games, for example with a relay race or with the game form "box circles", in which target points ("boxes") at different distances have to be circumnavigated one after the other by the individual runners of a team in the form of a relay race.

As a variant, an obstacle course can be carried out, whereby the course is usually marked with simple means. Other variants are that the pairs hopping back as an additional handicap , which is significantly more difficult, as well as a form of play related to sack jumping: Instead of tying their legs together, two participants each put their neighboring legs together in an empty sack that they can use until just before the crotch. They have to achieve their goal by pulling the sack up with their hands and running together - with the "middle leg hopping slightly" - in a race.

Alternatively, a race also can football game as a three-legged race to be played.
