content

Ricky Dean competes in karaoke for a living. He meets Liv at his ex-wife's funeral, and Liv's grandmother informs her that they are a father and daughter. The old lady later tells Dean in private that Liv needs him, that he shouldn't hurt Liv's feelings.

Dean wants to enter an Omaha couples karaoke competition. The winner is slated to receive $ 5,000 in prize money. Meanwhile, the salesman Todd Woods argues with his wife. He tells her he's going to buy cigarettes and drives away. In a karaoke bar, a woman persuades him to perform. Woods first says he cannot sing. The woman gives him pills that eventually relieve his inhibitions. During his performance, Woods takes pleasure in singing.

Suzi Loomis meets the taxi driver Billy Hannan and asks him to drive her to California. In return, she wants to be especially nice to him. Hannan flees from his partner, who sleeps with his girlfriend and who owns half the taxi. On the way, they have the car painted differently; Suzi offers the craftsman as payment to satisfy him orally.

Woods meanwhile drives around aimlessly. He meets Reggie Kane, who has been released from prison. Woods and Kane perform together in a bar. He later teaches Kane to drive and they become friends. Kane calls Woods' wife, who then meets her husband. Woods wants to move on through the USA, but Kane persuades him not to give up his orderly life.

Suzi and Hannan get to Omaha, where Suzi takes part in a competition. Shortly before her performance, she experiences a crisis. She cries and tells Hannan that she is a loser. Dean sings in a duet with his daughter in the finals of the competition. When it is Kane's turn, police officers enter the room where the competition is taking place. Kane pulls a gun and is shot by the police. A little later, Woods and his wife sit down in the now empty room where the competition took place. Suzi and Hannan drive together to the next place where a karaoke competition is to take place. They take Dean and his daughter with them.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films called dream couples a “melancholy comedy about small escapes and great longings”, which “developed consistently against the stereotypes of Hollywood cinema, had a harmonious atmosphere and was always careful” to “take its characters seriously”. The film is also "convincing in terms of performance". Cinema describes the film as a “beautiful, weird medley of ensemble comedy, road movie and social satire” that has “the trashy charm of a karaoke evening”.

MV Moorhead wrote in the Dallas Observer that the film was liked. In each of the three couples, one person needs redemption while the other acts like a guardian angel. This is how Liv takes care of her father. Some supporting roles are impressively cast, including Marian Seldes and Angie Dickinson. Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that the film had small islands of humor and perfection. The film makes use of well-known formulas such as the figure of a daughter who seeks to be close to her estranged father. Paul Giamatti is funny, Huey Lewis is the positive surprise of the film.
