Duncan Lamont (musician)

Duncan Lamont (born July 4, 1931 in Greenock , Scotland ; † July 2, 2019 ) was a British jazz musician ( alto and tenor saxophone , arrangement , composition ) who was also a songwriter .

Live and act

Lamont started out as a trumpeter and led his own band in Scotland, which was recognized by the Melody Maker in 1951 . He spent time in London playing with Kenny Graham's Afro-Cubists, but continued to be active in Scotland in the early 1950s. During this time he switched to the tenor saxophone. He then worked with numerous well-known British dance bands and jazz groups, including Basil and Ivor Kirchin , Ken Mackintosh , Jack Parnell , Geraldo , Eric Delaney and Vic Lewis , with whom he toured America in 1958. He also worked in the British jazz scene from the mid-1950s in the bands of Johnny Keating , Dudley Moore , Bill Russo , Johnny Scott , Stan Butcher , Johnnie Spence , Alan Branscombe and Michael Gibbs .

After his debut album Latin All the Way , which he recorded for metronome Records in 1966 , he recorded in 1970 for Pathé Lo Mejor de la Bossa Nova , on which musicians such as Ike Isaacs , Ron Mathewson and Barry Morgan participated. In 1971 he was involved in a concert by Buddy Rich , Louie Bellson and Kenny Clare with the Bobby Lamb- Ray Premru Orchestra; from the 1970s he played with Richard Rodney Bennett , Johnny Dankworth , Don Lusher , Kenny Wheeler ( Music For Large & Small Ensembles , ECM 1980), Tony Kinsey , Ted Heath , Bud Shank & Manny Albam , Kenny Baker and Joe Temperley , also as a companion of vocalists like Susannah McCorkle , Eartha Kitt and Elaine Delmar . Duncan also wrote string arrangements for Tina May's album My Kinda Love (Hepjazz, 2014). In the field of jazz he was involved in 73 recording sessions between 1957 and 2014.

As a studio musician, Lamont also worked with Frank Sinatra , Rosemary Clooney and Paul McCartney . In addition to his work as a musician, he wrote a number of songs such as "I Told You So" (recorded inter alia by Trudy Kerr ), "Carousel" (for Nancy Marano), "Not You Again" (for Cleo Laine ) and "Manhattan in the Rain “(recorded by Joyce Breach and Norma Winstone ). Lamont also wrote orchestral works such as "The Young Person's Guide to the Jazz Orchestra", "Soho Suite" and "Sherlock Holmes Suite", the latter with Spike Milligan . He has also composed music for children's television programs and various videos for the Walt Disney production. In 1999 he was honored with the John Dankworth Jazz Award . Lamont died shortly after a concert at the 606 Club to celebrate his upcoming 88th birthday.
