FranceFrance Team Europcar

The clear favorite to win was the winner of the last two years, Fabian Cancellara from Team RadioShack-Nissan . From the Omega Pharma-Quickstep team , the Belgian Tom Boonen , the French Sylvain Chavanel and Niki Terpstra in particular had good chances of winning. Team BMC also had three hot irons in the fire : Philippe Gilbert , Greg Van Avermaet and Alessandro Ballan absolutely wanted to win. Even Sep Vanmarcke had often proved is that to be reckoned with in the classics. Other favorites were: Óscar Freire ( Katjuscha ), Peter Sagan ( Liquigas ), Lars Boom , Matti Breschel (both Rabobank ), Filippo Pozzato Farnese Vini , as well as Marco Marcato and Bjorn Leukemans (both Vacansoleil-DCM ).

route

The race with start and finish in Harelbeke led over 13 Hellingen over 203 km. The profile was wavy, but not too difficult at the beginning. After 99 km the first slipway was on. The famous wall of Geraardsbergen forms the beginning. The next slipway followed 81 km from the destination. In this section of the route, the slipways were very close to each other. The cobblestones made these sections even more difficult and significant for the race and the course of the race. Slipway No. 10 was the Paterberg . The climb was only 362 meters long, but a maximum gradient of 20% and cobblestone pavement made the mountain very demanding. Slipway No. 11 was reached 34 km from the destination. Oude Kwaremont was 2.2 km long and 11% steep in the steepest part. This was followed by slipway No. 12, Knokteberg, 25 km from the finish, and after a 10 km stretch of asphalt, 15 km from the finish, the Tiegemberg, which was 1 km long and on average 6.5% steep. Then the last few kilometers were sloping or flat back to the finish line in Harelbeke.
