Here with the country code "1", which stands for Germany. In the case of a complete approval mark, the approval number and, if applicable, the number of the international agreement with the letter "R" and, if necessary, additional symbols must be affixed to this circle.

The ECE test mark agreed by the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) , also referred to as E-mark , E-mark or E- mark, is a marking of components on motor vehicles that require approval . It consists of a capital E in a circle and a test number related to the respective ECE regulation and states that the necessary tests and approvals have been carried out for the components marked with it and an ECE type approval has been issued. The states participating in the ECE procedure and their authorities recognize this type approval among themselves.

Basis for the ECE certification mark

The basis for these tests are the so-called ECE regulations of the Economic Commission for Europe of the United Nations ( Economic Commission for Europe , ECE ) in Geneva . The component marked in this way may be carried and operated in Germany and Austria without a special entry in the vehicle documents - neither a parts certificate (TGA) nor an EG-BE / ABE is required , as long as the area of use specified in the approval is adhered to. In Germany, the recognition of the E-mark is regulated in Section 21a of the StVZO .

There is no E-label without a number following the "E". The marking is a type approval and is not based on a manufacturer's declaration. B. issued by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) on request together with a type approval number. The structure and attachment of this marking is described in the relevant ECE directive.

Execution and form

The certification mark consists of a circle with the letter " E " and the code of the state that issued the approval inside , as well as the approval number near this circle, or the number of the international agreement with the letter " R “and possibly additional characters.

use

The test mark may only be affixed to vehicle parts or equipment parts that also comply with the provisions of the approval. A symbol which, due to its similar appearance, can lead to confusion with the ECE test mark, must not be found on vehicle parts. When operating devices that are operated in a motor vehicle without an “e” or “E” mark, the operating license may expire under certain circumstances .

Differentiation from other supranational test marks in Europe

In addition to the ECE test mark, there is also the test mark for vehicles and vehicle parts, which is based on harmonized national law by means of legal acts of the European Union in the form of directives ; it is issued on a different legal basis than the ECE test mark. The test mark, which is based indirectly on these guidelines, consists of a small e in a rectangle and states that a European type approval has been granted for these vehicles or vehicle parts. In the Federal Republic of Germany it is recognized in accordance with Section 21a, Paragraph 1a in conjunction with Paragraph 1 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO); the design of the test mark is described in Section 21a (2) sentence 2 StVZO and the code for the Federal Republic of Germany is determined by Section 21a (2) sentence 3 StVZO.

The CE marking, which is also based on harmonized national law by means of legal acts of the European Union in the form of directives, is not an approval mark or test mark, as it is not based in all cases on a test and not on a completely external approval procedure, but on one of the EU declaration of conformity issued by the manufacturer or the manufacturers of the product . This is based on a conformity assessment carried out by the manufacturer or manufacturers of the product . However, depending on the directive on which the EU declaration of conformity required in a specific case is based, the involvement of notified bodies in the conformity assessment procedure may be required, in particular for the implementation of EC type tests .
