Eataly is one of the largest distributors of Italian consumer goods worldwide. The range includes a variety of restaurants , food and drink counters in specialized supermarkets, consumer goods and a cooking school. The company was founded by Oscar Farinetti, who previously worked in the consumer electronics field. Eataly cooperates with Slow Food .
History of the company
In January 2007, the Italian businessman Oscar Farinetti opened the first Eataly store in a disused vermouth factory in Turin in the Lingotto district .
The branch, which opened in New York on August 31, 2010 , is located on Madison Square Park and is owned by Eataly and the Batali & Bastianich Hospitality Group , a partnership with Mario Batali , Lidia Bastianich and Joe Bastianich. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg attended the opening and praised the creation of 300 new jobs. More than 700 people now work at this location. Even two weeks after it opened, the lines of waiting guests continued down Fifth Avenue.
At the beginning of 2012, Eataly opened the largest branch in Rome to date , namely at the Ostiense train station. On December 2, 2013, Eataly opened another store at 43 E. Ohio Street in Chicago . This location extends over around 5,850 square meters, making it the largest Eataly in the USA. Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich own shares in the Chicago branch.
On March 18, 2014, Eataly opened a 5,000 square meter store on Piazza XXV Aprile in Milan . The store is called "Eataly Smeraldo" because it is located in a former theater. The stage built in it will continue to be used for musical acts, speeches and exhibitions.
Eataly currently operates 27 locations worldwide in the USA, Brazil, Dubai, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Italy and, since autumn 2015, also in Germany: The joint venture between Eataly Italia and Signa Retail founded in October 2015 opened here on November 25th In 2015, an Eataly store with an area of 4,600 square meters in Munich's Schrannenhalle directly on Viktualienmarkt. Expansion to at least five other locations in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland is planned by 2021.

Until 2015, Eataly was only represented in Italy within Europe. After the opening in Munich, further stores are planned in Paris and London from 2016.
Expansion in Germany
The first German branch opened as the 27th store of the chain on November 26, 2015 in Munich's Schrannenhalle with around 4,000 square meters of retail space.
