Count Clemens Eberhard Theodor zu Solms-Sonnenwalde (born July 2, 1825 in Kotitz near Bautzen , † June 29, 1912 in Berlin ) was a Prussian, later a German diplomat.

Eberhard zu Solms-Sonnenwalde came from a branch of the Hessian aristocratic family Solms, who were wealthy in Brandenburg, with their headquarters in Sonnewalde and other goods in Hillmersdorf , Proßmarke and Pouch . Life

From 1878 to 1887 he was extraordinary envoy and Ministre plénipotentiaire of the German Empire to the Spanish King Alfonso XII. and negotiated in the conflict through the occupation of the Yap from the Karolineninselgruppe by troops of the German Reich. In the same position he signed the Madrid Protocol in 1885 , which on the one hand laid down the sovereign rights of Spain over the Sulu Archipelago and on the other hand guaranteed Germany free trade and shipping within the Sulu Archipelago and northern Borneo .

In 1889 Solms was Wilhelm II's ambassador to Maria Christina of Austria in Spain.

In 1892 Solms was Wilhelm II's ambassador to Umberto I of Italy . He negotiated with Antonio Starabba di Rudinì . At the end of 1893, Solms was replaced by Bernhard von Bülow as the ambassador of the German Reich in Italy. In 1899 his son dueled a count von der Schulenburg.

In mid-1900, Solms was the imperial commissioner for the voluntary medical service in China and thanked the American Hospital Ship Maine for the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion and offered medical facilities of the German Reich to the US armed forces.
