Eckhard Friauf

Eckhard Friauf (born February 4, 1956 in Treysa / Hessen ) is a German biologist and neurobiologist . He researches and teaches at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern .

Life

After receiving his A- levels in 1974 at Schwalm-Gymnasium in Schwalmstadt and serving in the armed forces with the artillery , Friauf studied biology from 1976 with a focus on zoology (with Hans-Ulrich Schnitzler ), microbiology (with Rudolf Thauer ), pharmacology (with Josef Krieglstein ) and physics (with Heribert Reitböck and Reinhard Eckhorn) at the University of Marburg , where he received his diploma in biology in 1982 with a neurobiological thesis on methods for the localization of electrophysiological recording sites in the brain of rats.

From 1982 to 1983 he spent a year at New York University , Medical School in New York with Rodolfo Llinás .

The degree of Dr. rer. nat. He obtained his doctoral thesis at the University of Tübingen in 1987 on the correlation of structure and function of motor and sensory neurons in the brain of rats.

From 1987 to 1989 he worked as a postdoc and research fellow of the German Academic Exchange Service at the Department of Neurobiology at Stanford University with Carla J. Shatz .

In 1994 he received his habilitation in animal physiology from the University of Tübingen .

From 1994 to 1999 Friauf held a professorship for physiology at the Frankfurt University Hospital. There he worked in the Physiology Center with Rainer Klinke and Rudi Busse . From 1997 to 1999 he was the founder and spokesman of the Graduate School "Neural Plasticity: Molecules, Structures, Functions", which was funded by the German Research Foundation . Heinz Wässle and Wolf Singer , among others, participated in this graduate school .

Since 1999 he has been a professor at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and heads the animal physiology department in the biology department. His main research interests are the central auditory system and its ontogenesis .

In 2005 he received the Academy Prize of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate for exemplary performance in teaching and research.

In 2011 Friauf became coordinator of a priority program of the German Research Foundation with the title "Ultrafast and temporally precise information processing: normal and dysfunctional hearing".

From March 2015 to March 2017 he was Vice President and from 2017 to 2019 President of the Neuroscientific Society

Trivia

Friauf is a children's university professor, plays Bb trumpet in a trombone choir in Trippstadt and loves jazz - like classical music.
