Edgar Benson

Edgar John Benson PC (* 28. May 1923 in Cobourg , Ontario , † 2 September 2011 in Ottawa , Ontario) was a Canadian chartered accountant , diplomat , university professor and politician of the Liberal Party .

Life

After attending school, he began his military service in the armed forces and served in Europe between 1941 and 1945 in World War II . He then studied business administration at Queen's University in Kingston , graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm.). He then worked as an auditor and was also a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and later a lecturer and assistant professor of business administration at Queen's University.

He began his political career as a candidate for the Liberal Party when he was first elected as a member of the House of Commons in the election of June 18, 1962 and represented the constituency of Kingston until September 1972 .

During his parliamentary membership he was Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury Secretary from May 1963 to June 1964, before he was subsequently appointed Minister for National Income in the 19th Federal Government by Prime Minister Lester Pearson and held this office until January 1968. He was also President of the Treasury between October 1966 and April 1968.

After Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau took office in April 1968, he was appointed finance minister in the 20th federal government and held this office until January 1972. At the same time, he held the office of President of the Treasury until July 1968. Most recently he was Minister of National Defense in a cabinet reshuffle in January 1972 , but resigned from this post on August 31, 1972, since he became President of the Canadian Transport Commission on September 1, 1972.

Most recently, Benson was Ambassador to Ireland from 1982 to 1985 .
