Edgar Josef Korherr

Edgar Josef Korherr (born June 12, 1928 in Vienna ; † March 14, 2015 in Mödling ) was an Austrian theologian and religious educator. He was a pioneer of religious education in Austria.

Life

After graduating from high school, Edgar Korherr studied at the Bundesrealgymnasium Gmünd at the University of Vienna . In 1963 he received his doctorate in philosophy and at the same time received the qualification to teach religion for all Austrian school types. From 1949 to 1962 he worked as a religion teacher and from 1962 to 1968 as a specialist inspector at special schools in the area of ​​the Archdiocese of Vienna .

In 1966 he was appointed professor at the Pedagogical Academy of the Vienna Archdiocese. Since 1968 he was also director of the Catechetical Institute in Vienna. From 1966 to 1972 he held a teaching position at the SVD St. Gabriel Mödling monastery. In 1971 he was the founding president of the Religious Education Academy in Vienna.

1976 took place call on the Chair of catechetics and pedagogy at the Karl-Franzens University Graz . From 1984 to 1986 he was dean of the theological faculty. In 1996 he retired .

Korherr was editor of the Christian Pedagogical Papers from 1968 to 1993 . He was the lead editor of the Austrian Catechetical Directory and co-author of numerous curricula, student and teacher manuals. He has authored several books and numerous articles that have appeared in several languages.

He was involved in various national and international specialist bodies. From 1976 to 1994 he was a member of the International Catechetical Council of the World Church and from 1977 to 1993 a member of the International Catechetical Council of the Roman Congregation for the Clergy . In 1977 he was a member of the Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops .

In 2000 he was accepted as a full member of the Theological Section of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts .
