Edmund J. Whalen (born July 6, 1958 in Staten Island , New York ) is an American clergyman and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in New York .

Life

Edmund Whalen entered the seminary after graduating from Monsignor Farrell High School and initially studied at Cathedral College in Douglaston , Queens from 1976 to 1980 . As a seminarian at the Pontifical North America College in Rome , he continued his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University until 1983 . From 1983 to 1985 he studied moral theology at the Accademia Alfonsiana , where he obtained his licentiate . He was ordained deacon by Curia Archbishop Jean Jadot on April 14, 1983 in St. Peter's Basilica for the Archdiocese of New York . He received the sacrament of ordination on June 23, 1984 through Archbishop John Joseph O'Connor .

In addition to various tasks in pastoral care, as a teacher and headmaster, he was the personal secretary of Archbishop John Joseph Cardinal O'Connor from 1990 to 1992 . After further studies at the Accademia Alfonsiana from 1992 to 1995 he was awarded a Dr. theol. PhD . From 1995 to 1998 he was Professor and Subregens at the Yonkers Seminary . He then led the boys' college in the Bronx until 2001 . In January 2019 he was appointed Episcopal Vicar for the clergy .

On 10 October 2019 it appointed Pope Francis to the titular bishop of Cemerinianus and auxiliary bishop in New York. The Archbishop of New York, Timothy Cardinal Dolan , donated it and the same time appointed Gerardo J. Colacicco same year on December 10, the episcopal ordination . Co- consecrators were Archbishop Emeritus of Hartford , Henry Joseph Mansell , and New York Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Gerald Thomas Walsh .
