This list of honorary grandmasters in chess ( HGM or HWGM , English Honorary (Woman) Grandmaster ) lists those chess players who did not meet the requirements of the regular grandmaster title , but were otherwise able to achieve outstanding performance in chess.

The world chess federation FIDE has awarded the honorary grandmaster title since 1977 to players whose career had already peaked before the official award of the grandmaster title in 1950. The honorary grandmaster title is still included in the FIDE title regulations of 2005 and in the FIDE manual of the same year, but no longer afterwards. According to Christian Krause, member of the Technical Commission of FIDE and FIDE rating officer of the German Chess Federation, the FIDE rules committee decided in 2006 to abolish the HGMs, so that they came into force on July 1, 2007.

Since the World Chess Federation has not published a list of all (male and female) honorary grandmasters, the list may be incomplete. It is also unclear whether the titleholders are seen as regular grandmasters today.
