Eifel race 1933
The Eifelrennen 1933 took place on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring from May 26th to 28th , seven days after the AVUS race the second international automobile race of the 1933 season in Germany . The event included seven competitions, three for cars, two for motorcycles and two for sidecar teams. The winner of the most powerful class, cars over 1500 cm³, received a prize of 3,500 Reichsmarks .
After the seizure of power on January 30, 1933 , the National Socialists demonstrated their strength in an intrusive way at the Nürburgring. In the reporting of the magazine Motor und Sport it was read: “An SS honor guard is raised, the black-white-red flag goes up on the mast, the Germany song sounds, the swastika banner is hoisted and the Horst-Wessel song is played. The motorcycles are lined up, heavy gray clouds hang over the Nürburg - this is how the International ADAC Eifel Race begins in 1933. “From then on, the Nazi state increasingly instrumentalized motor sport for its propaganda and turned manufacturers and drivers into advertising media criminal system.

On the Thursday before the race, the first practice session took place on the 22.810-kilometer circuit. Due to heavy rain, however, very few drivers took the opportunity to drive on the track. On Friday, Tazio Nuvolari quickly emerged as the favorite for the race win.
Around 100,000 spectators gathered at the Nürburgring on race Sunday. Shortly before the start of the cars over 1500 cm³, the rain stopped, which had been falling over the track since the early hours of the morning. At the beginning of the race, Piero Taruffi, who had started fifth, took the lead, which he lost to Louis Chiron after the first lap , followed by Nuvolari and von Brauchitsch . After two laps, Nuvolari finally led Chiron and steadily increased his lead. On the fifth lap, Chiron had to pits for the first time to refuel, but three more stops followed due to a tank leak. Nuvolari finally won by almost six minutes over von Brauchitsch and Taruffi. The Hungarian László Hartmann caused a curiosity when he drove into a 16th lap after the end of the race. His extra lap, however, had already passed the south bend, where he overturned but was unharmed.
The fastest race lap was officially attributed to Tazio Nuvolari, but there is no timed stop.
The class up to 1500 cm³ was won by Francis Curzon, 5th Earl Howe , on Delage with a second lead over Ernst Günther Burggaller on Bugatti , the class up to 800 cm³ by Lord Hamilton on MG .
motorcycles
A total of 58 solo machines were registered for the motorcycle races over 15 laps each, starting in the classes up to 350 cm³ and up to 1000 cm³. There were only 15 teams; they drove 10 laps each in the classes up to 600 cm³ and up to 1000 cm³. In the big motorcycle class, the order of the leading drivers Hans Soenius , Paul Rüttchen and Bernd Rosemeyer changed several times during the initial phase of the race , until Rosemeyer had to fail due to water in the electrical system. Rüttchen crashed several times, so that Soenius won on Norton after 3: 27: 58.1 hours with an average of 98.75 km / h. Ernst Loof won the class up to 350 cm³ on Imperia in 3: 30: 19.3 hours. The big team class was won by Paul Weyres on a Harley-Davidson , the class up to 600 cm³ by the Swiss couple Hans and Cilly strengkle on NSU .
