action
In the course of a raid on Molocco, a boss of the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta , a statue of the Madonna is found in his cellar, weeping incessantly blood. She is taken to a closed swimming pool in the strictest of secrecy in order to somehow catch the masses of blood. Few people are aware of the find, including the Italian Prime Minister Fabrizio Pietromarchi, who is having a broken marriage with his wife Sole and is struggling with an upcoming referendum on Italexit , which he threatens to lose as a proponent of remaining in the EU . Pietromarchi is an atheist, but the figure also casts a spell over him. Fabrizio's son nearly drowns in an accident caused by his sister in her grandmother's swimming pool. He suffers from severe cerebral hemorrhage. In the hospital, the doctors fight for the boy's life, but in vain. This breaks Sole and Fabrizio's marriage, but thanks to the nationwide wave of solidarity, Fabrizio wins the referendum.
A team of chemists and biologists come to the conclusion that it is human blood. But all rational and scientific attempts at explanation fail. The biochemist Sandra Roversi believes that she can cure her mother, who has been in a vegetative state for years, with a sample of the blood. The priest Marcello, who is addicted to games and sex and a friend of the prime minister who had fallen away from the faith, has a vision and is of the opinion that the statue could save humanity. Votta, the head of the secret service, tries in vain to gain access to Molocco, which culminates in his suicide. On a trip to Calabria, where the statue was found, he tries to get answers.
The story is told in an earlier narrative thread. The daughter of the mafioso Molocco dies under mysterious circumstances. Nicolino, the mentally retarded son of Molocco's stepbrother Salvo, is suspected. Molocco demands the death of Nicolino from Salvo, but Salvo does not have the heart. Instead, Salvo tries to kill himself, but he also fails. In this family crisis, Nicolino and his father find the bleeding Madonna that they bring to Molocco.

Reviews
Christian Buß is enthusiastic about Spiegel Online , considers the series to be disturbing and ultra-modern, and says, "How here social vibrations are translated into stories with strong images, plots and figures with generally valid truths about fear, greed and decay, [is] Unique. ”On faz.net, Ursula Scheer particularly praises the acting, speaks of the characters developing amazingly and praises the selection of music in the series,“ which in moments of greatest horror uses the most brutal and gentle weapon: Italian hits. ”
