A royal promise (original title: Královský slib ) is a Czech fairy tale film by Krystof Hanzlík from 2001.

action

On the battlefield, a king once promised his dying friend that he would marry his daughter into his family on her 20th birthday and thus unite their two countries. When the said birthday approaches and the king's son has also reached marriageable age, the king has the princess brought to his court. The prince and princess get to know each other at a party. But the two could hardly be more different. The nature-loving prince does not think much of court life and prefers to have animals than people around him. The clever and sensible princess, in turn, longs for a mature and serious man by her side. But the king remains stubborn, insists on his promise and does not allow his mentor Bodhan to dissuade him from his decision.

The prince then withdrew all the more from the court. From then on he moves around with his new squire, who is Dina, Bodhan's daughter disguised as a boy. Due to his permanent absence, the widowed king and princess spend a lot of time together. The prince learns that his squire is actually a girl. They fall in love and now flee from the king's men, who are supposed to bring them back to the castle. At a stream they meet Bodhan, who hands them over to the king.

At the next meeting the king wants to force his son to be engaged to the princess. He finally came up with a way out of the tricky situation. She in turn proposes marriage to the king because she has fallen in love with him and wants to keep her promise with him as a man. They kiss and the prince and Dina can now look forward to a future together.

background

Žleby Castle, where the film was set

The original screenplay for the film was written by František Pavlíček in 1965 , who later also wrote the screenplay for Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella (1973). The project, which was supposed to be implemented in the Barrandov studios at the time , could only be realized decades later as a Czech television production by the director Kryštof Hanzlík. František Pavlíček's son, Roman Pavlíček, was employed as a cameraman. The shooting took place at Castle Žleby , the castle Cuknštejn and on the Czech-Austrian border near the Gratzener highlands instead.

A Royal Promise premiered on Czech television on September 13, 2001. A royal promise was first shown on German television on February 5, 2005 .
