action

The tranquil English town of Pagford gets into turmoil after the unexpected death of council member Barry Fairbrother. Fairbrother leaves his widow Mary and a place on the parish council. The question arises whether the respected fellow citizen was killed in his early 40s and this could possibly have something to do with his commitment to the socially disadvantaged in the village.

Gradually, intrigue and corruption show up on the spot and how much the residents are shaped by family disputes, wickedness and greed for money. Howard Mollison, the chairman of the local council and owner of a delicatessen shop, sees an opportunity to sell the stately Sweetlove property to investors. Tess Wall, the teacher at a nearby school that works for young people from disadvantaged families, opposes these plans. She sees the community center, where an aid project for drug addicts has been set up, in danger. Those cared for here include Krystal Weedon and her drug-addicted mother Terri.

Together with them and the doctor Parminder Jawanda and the social worker Kaye Bawden, she fights for the preservation of the facility and against the plans to sell the Sweetlove property.

characters

Howard Mollison

The deeply self-satisfied Howard is 70 years old and married to Shirley. The two have a son named Miles, who is the father of the twins Lexi and Libby. As chairman of the Pagford parish council, Howard feels almost like the king of the tranquil place. Howard also runs a delicatessen store, the window of which is adorned with a logo that reads Purveyor of fine Foods and shows a portrait of Howard. Howard and his business partner Mo are planning to open a café next door.

Shirley Mollison

Howard's wife is a petite but extremely ambitious woman and would love to live the lives of Aubrey and Julia Sweetlove, who own the Sweetlove estate. On the other hand, she hates Barry Fairbrother and everything he stands for, and she doesn't really get along with her son Miles' wife either. Shirley works as the local council secretary and is also responsible for its website.

Barry Fairbrother

The 40-year-old Barry is married to Mary; the two have no children. Barry is the half-brother of Simon Price and has made something of his life differently, because he is a lawyer and partner in a company with Miles Mollison. Barry also has a seat on the local council and is a passionate supporter of the Sweetlove project, the local drug clinic. His involvement ends with his sudden death, which shakes the whole village community.

Tess Wall

Tess is in her forties and married to the local school's assistant principal Colin Wall. The two adopted Fats Stuart. Tess works at the same school as her husband, acts as a trust teacher, advises students on social matters and also takes care of disadvantaged families who live in the socially disadvantaged district of The Fields , especially Krystal Weedon and her mother. She sits on the local council with Barry and is one of his most loyal allies in the fight against Howard until he dies.

Miles Mollison

Miles is the 43-year-old son of Howard and Shirley and is married to Samantha. The two have twins Lexie and Libby. He and Barry Fairbrother founded a law firm in the city. It is often difficult for him to reconcile his work with Barry and his parents.

Samantha Mollison

Miles' wife attended the same university as her husband, but dropped out when he became pregnant and had to move with him to Pagford. After the twins were born, Samantha suffered severe postnatal depression. Samantha is the owner of a lingerie boutique in Pagford.

Colin Wall

The assistant principal at Pagford was a good friend of Barry. Since he wants to continue his legacy, he defends the drug clinic before the local council.

Stuart Wall

Colin and Tess' adopted son, named Fats , is in a relationship with Krystal.

Terri Weedon

Krystal and Robbie's drug addict mother actually lives in an apartment in The Fields but is mostly at the local drug clinic.

Krystal Weedon

Terri's 16-year-old daughter is in a relationship with Stuart Wall.

Trivia

  • The original title of the book and the series refers to the Casual Vacancy ( vacancy ), a situation that results from the death or the resignation or expulsion of a member of a deliberative assembly.
  • When filming began in 2014, residents of Painswick complained about a supposedly newly opened lingerie boutique in town. In fact, it was just a film set.
