Einar Steen-Nøkleberg

Einar Steen-Nøkleberg (born April 25, 1944 in Østre Toten , Fylke Oppland , Norway ) is a Norwegian pianist .

Steen-Nøkleberg studied with Nicolai Dirdal and Hans Leygraf and won competitions and prizes, such as the 1975 Norwegian Press Prize for his interpretation of Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto . The BBC in London recognized his recordings of the same work as the best on the market.

Steen-Nøkleberg has given international concerts as a soloist with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra , the Royal Copenhagen Chapel , the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Chinese Philharmonic and the Oslo Philharmonic. His repertoire includes works of various styles from the musical baroque to the Viennese classical period , the romantic period to works by Maurice Ravel , Paul Hindemith and Arnold Schönberg, among others . This includes in particular the entire piano works by Edvard Grieg , Halfdan Kjerulf and Harald Sæverud .

Steen-Nøkleberg taught from 1975 to 1981 and since 1994 as a professor of piano at the Hanover Music Academy and at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo . He gives master classes worldwide, including at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, and is also a juror at numerous well-known competitions. Since his retirement as professor in 2014, he has continued to teach.

In 1993 he founded the Oslo Grieg Society in Oslo , which organizes the “Concours Grieg” for pianists and the Edvard Grieg composers' competition. In 2000 he founded the International Grieg Piano Competition in Bergen. He was also in charge of the new edition of Edvard Grieg's piano works at Henle Verlag .

Steen-Nøkleberg's discography comprises more than 50 recordings and, in addition to the recording of the entire piano works by Edvard Grieg, Halfdan Kjerulf , Harald Sæverud and Thomas Tellefsen, also includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach , Ludwig van Beethoven , Franz Schubert and Frédéric Chopin .
