The El Tambo district is located in the Huancayo province of the Junín region in central western Peru . The district was established on November 13, 1943. It has an area of ​​166 km². At the 2017 census there were 166,359 inhabitants in the district. In 1993 the population was 112,284, in 2007 146,847. The administrative center is the city ​​of the same name , El Tambo , at an altitude of 3260  m , where around 95 percent of the population lives.

Geographical location

The El Tambo district is located in the north of the metropolitan area of ​​the provincial and regional capital Huancayo and borders directly on the city and the Huancayo district in the south . The Río Shullcas runs between the two districts. The El Tambo district has a maximum longitudinal extent in SW-NE direction of about 28 km. The Río Mantaro flows south along the western district boundary. The district extends in the northeast to the 5557  m high Cordillera Huaytapallana , a mountain range of the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The district borders in the northwest on the districts of San Agustín de Cajas , Hualhuas and San Pedro de Saño , in the north on the district of Quilcas and in the northeast on the districts of Comas ( province of Concepción ) and Pariahuanca . In the far west lie the neighboring districts of Huamancaca Chico ( province of Chupaca ) and Pilcomayo .
