Elbow is a British rock band from Manchester .

history

Elbow comes from the Manchester music scene in the 1990s, centered around the vibrant Northern Quarter on Oldham Street .

The band is named after a quote from the BBC television miniseries " The Singing Detective ". The character "Philip Marlow" said there that the word " Elbow " (German: "Ellenbogen") is the most sensual word in the English language, not because of its definition, but because of the way it feels when pronounced.

1990: Foundation and first publications

Guy Garvey met Mark Potter in 1990 at the age of 16 at a sixth form college (" high school "). Mark invited Guy as a singer in a band in which he played with Richard Jupp and Pete Turner. Together they founded the band SOFT . By 1997 they changed the band's name to Elbow , signed a contract with Island Records and recorded their debut album with Steve Osbourne as producer .

Iceland Records was created by the music label Universal Music bought and Elbow were dropped along with many other bands. So the album never came out. They then released the EPs The Noisebox and The Newborn on the independent label Ugly Man Records , which was discovered by BBC Radio 1 and played frequently.

2000: First album "Asleep in the Back"

For their first album Asleep in the Back , which was released in 2001 by V2 Records , they received nominations for the Mercury Music Prize and the Brit Awards .

The title of the second album Cast of Thousands , released in 2003, is a reference to their appearance at the Glastonbury Festival in 2002, when they recorded thousands of people singing "We still believe in love, so fuck you". In 2004 Elbow went on tour in Cuba and was the first British band to play a concert outside of Havana . British documentary filmmaker Irshad Ashraf made a short film from this tour .

The band released their third album, Leaders of the Free World , in September 2005, after the first single Forget Myself (also known as Buddha with Mace ) was released on August 22nd. They contributed the song Snowball to the charity album Help - a Day in the Life by WAR child , which was released in 2005 .

2008: Breakthrough with "The Seldom Seen Kid"

In March 2008, the fourth album The Seldom Seen Kid was released , for which the band was proposed again for the Mercury Music Prize seven years after the first nomination and, unlike in 2001, won it. Elbow surprisingly prevailed against bands like Radiohead , British Sea Power and Estelle . When recording The Seldom Seen Kid, Elbow completely renounced the involvement of external producers, which, as they describe themselves, makes the album “Darker and Heavier”.

Since then, Elbow have been supporting many big bands in stadiums. So they did appearances as the opening act for REM , U2 and Coldplay .

In February 2009 Elbow won the Brit Award for Best Band of the Year, and in May two Ivor Novello Awards .

The fifth album Build a Rocket Boys! was released in March 2011.

On August 12, 2012 Elbow played at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in London. Then their last chart single One Day Like This rose again in the British charts and brought them their first top 5 hit.

With the album The Take Off and Landing of Everything , which was released in March 2014 , Elbow achieved their highest positions to date with the top position in the British album charts and 22nd place in the German album charts.

In March 2016 it was announced that Richard Jupp would be leaving the band.
