Elbow Lake is located in the middle of an extensive lake landscape in western Minnesota at 45 ° 59'39 "north latitude and 95 ° 58'36" west longitude. The city extends over 3.50 km², which is spread over 4.46 km² of land and 0.96 km² of water.

From north to southeast, US Highway 59 shares a route with Minnesota State Route 55 as the main road through Elbow Lake. The Minnesota State Highway 54 and 79 also converge in the city. All other roads are subordinate, partly unpaved roads as well as inner-city connecting roads.

A Canadian Pacific Railway runs through downtown Elbow Lake in a northwest-southeast direction .

With the Elbow Lake Municipal - Pride of the Prairie Airport, there is a small regional airport on the western outskirts. The nearest major airport is Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (284 km southeast).
