Eldorado is a documentary film by Markus Imhoof from 2018 in which the Swiss director combines experiences from his childhood with questions about humanity and social responsibility in connection with the global phenomenon of flight and migration .

content

Director Imhoof links his own childhood memories of escape with current escape stories. He was still a little boy when his family took in the Italian "Red Cross child" Giovanna at the end of World War II. It will soon be expelled again due to the legal situation in Switzerland at the time. The two children kept in touch in a lively correspondence until the girl in Italy died of emaciation at the age of 14 .

The letters, pictures and imaginary dialogues with Giovanna are intertwined with contemporary scenes in the Mediterranean and in Switzerland.

Using specific individual fates, Imhoof reveals the background and structures of the migration crisis and makes it clear how they are related to the global flow of capital and goods: He shows a farmer from Senegal who leaves voluntarily with a return premium of CHF 3,000 and two dairy cows in his home country buys to make a living. But he cannot sell his milk there because the EU subsidizes milk exports from Europe to Africa and thus breaks down local prices.

Rahel from Eritrea ends up in prison on her escape in Libya , is forced into prostitution there and is allowed to work as a nurse in Switzerland until she is deported. Jean Quartarolo from the International Organization for Migration explains that deportation is possible because what happens while fleeing is not considered a reason for asylum .
