Elwood Ullman (born May 27, 1903 in Memphis , Tennessee , † October 11, 1985 in Hollywood , California ) was an American screenwriter who was once - accidentally - for the Oscar for the best original story and - now regularly - the price the Writers Guild of America (WGA Award) was nominated for Best Musical .

Life

Ullman, whose family owners of Whiskey - Distillery was renounced an entry as a manager in the company and moved instead working as a writer before. First he wrote humorous stories for magazines such as Captain Billy's Whiz Bang , Life , but also daily newspapers in New York City and St. Louis .

Through the mediation of the screenwriter Jack Natteford , Ullman began his work as a screenwriter in 1932 and made his debut with the template for the short film Foiled Again by Charles Lamont . In the following years he wrote the scripts and templates for numerous so-called "two reelers", short films that consisted of two film roles . In 1936 he moved to the short film department of Columbia Pictures and wrote for Columbia stars like The Three Stooges , Andy Clyde and Charley Chase .

After 15 years in the short film department and written around 100 short film scripts, Ullman began writing screenplays for feature-length films in 1951 . He wrote to his entry into the retirement 1966, the templates of almost 50 films and television series .

At the Academy Awards in 1957 , he and Edward Bernds were - accidentally - nominated for the Oscar for the best original story, namely for the comedy High Society (1955) by William Beaudine with Leo Gorcey , Huntz Hall and Bernard Gorcey from the so-called The Bowery Boys -Film series. However, it was an oversight: Actually, John Patrick should have been nominated for the 1956 film The Top Ten Thousand by Charles Walters with Bing Crosby , Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra , but it was confused with a film of the same name on which Ullman and Bernds were involved. The nomination was then withdrawn. Bernds and Ullman thereupon waived the official nomination and Patrick's nomination was also withdrawn.

In 1961 Ullman was with Noel Langley for Schneewittchen & The Three Stooges (Snow White and the Three Stooges, 1961) by Walter Lang with the three Stooges ( Moe Howard , Larry Fine and Joe DeRita ) as well as Carol Heiss , Edson Stroll and Patricia Medina for the WGA Award nominated for Best American Musical by the Writers Guild of America.
