It's a black day for Dr. Luka Kovač: His growing self-destructive attitude resulted in a car accident in which his co-driver, medical student Harkins, was seriously injured. The events that ultimately led to this tragic accident are shown on the basis of many leaps in time: Rumors of an illegal rendezvous (doctor - student) with Harkins are burdening him. After a Christmas party at Susan's, he has to come spontaneously to work. Overtired and hungover, he overlooks acute leukemia in a young man who then suffers severe brain damage. He also deals with two quarreling old Croatian men, one of whom had betrayed the other's family to the Ustaša sixty years earlier (Luka compares them with the Gestapo to explain ). The family was almost completely wiped out as a result. This involuntarily awakens Kovač's memories of his own painful past in Croatia.

192 13 No good deed goes unpunished No Good Deed Goes Unpunished Jan. 30, 2003 Dec 17, 2003 Nelson McCormick R. Scott Gemmill
Pratt is deeply concerned about Leon, whose so-called friends repeatedly drag him into their criminal activities. Weaver's favor for Councilor Bright has paid off for the hospital, but it has made her more and more dependent on his favor. Elizabeth is taken by surprise by the attractive and arrogant new surgeon Dorset. Romano cannot accept his physical limitations and lets his students perform a delicate operation under his sole supervision, unable to help them. When a girl lets herself be taken in to have her stomach pumped out, Luka is indignant about a generally decadent attitude in America ("I'll tell you what an eating disorder is: If a mother starves for six days because she what she has given her three children is a real eating disorder! "). He wants Carter to join Doctors Without Borders . Eric contacts Abby, he shows himself understanding about his illness and apologizes to her for his behavior. On the way to the bus station, Carter describes his love for Abby to Maggie. She doesn't necessarily encourage him with her answer. An almost perfectly prepared new marriage proposal then fails at the last second due to Carter's sudden doubts. Shortly afterwards, Abby accidentally discovers his great-grandmother's prepared ring and can now classify the strange situation. Abby continues to develop her friendship with the cancer-stricken teenager and does not reject his attempts at flirting either - despite his mother's urgent request to break off private contact with him.

City Councilor Bright asks Weaver again for a favor: This time it's about his co-worker and lover, who is also ill with syphilis and is to be treated anonymously or unofficially. When Kerry wants to refuse and points out legal limits, Bright blackmailed her with possibly no hospital subsidies. Kerry collapses, but the treatment has serious consequences for everyone involved, especially for her young patient ...

200 21st day and night When Night Meets Day May 8, 2003 Feb 25, 2004 Jack Orman Jack Orman
The camera alternately follows Carter during the day shift and Pratt during the following night shift. Some of them treat the same patients and face cultic mass suicide during a solar eclipse. Carter, who actually wanted to fly to Rio de Janeiro with his father the next day , lived through hell on earth during this last shift, while Pratt was able to bring a relatively large amount of good news a few hours later. When his father cancels the planned vacation, Carter is finally at the end of his strength. Kovač asks for support from the emergency room in the Congo by phone , as the helpers are overwhelmed by an illness in the team. Since his vacation plans have failed and he thinks a change of scenery is necessary, Carter leaves everything behind (including the astonished Abby) and agrees to Luka. Pratt, on the other hand, has grown fond of the hospital. He ultimately decides not to move to Mercy Hospital as planned, but to stay with the County General.
201 22nd Kisangani Kisangani May 15, 2003 3rd Mar 2004 Christopher Chulack John Wells
In the Congo reached, Carter from the first moment killed by the local conditions and the Chicago wishes almost chaos back. However, it quickly finds its place and has its hands full. When he complains about the difficult conditions and the lack of treatment options, Luka reminds him how special and fulfilling her work can be (“When was the last time you saved two hundred lives in one afternoon, my dear?”). The civil war has officially ended since the beginning of peace negotiations in 2002, but heavy fighting between the military and rebel groups, which can hardly be distinguished from a war , continues to rage, especially in the area around Kivu . When the troops reached the infirmary a few days after Carter's arrival, it was evacuated. Luka explains to the completely disturbed John the consequences of the war for the people directly affected in the Congo in contrast to the significance of the American wars for the people 'at home'. He also reveals to Carter his very personal scars that the Croatian war burned into his memory (see quote below). Every day here holds new terrible surprises in store for Carter, diagnosing diseases that are believed to be eradicated everywhere else in the world, such as: B. Polio . Most of these diseases (e.g. pertussis ) can only be treated inadequately by the team due to the lack of medication.

Central statements

The Emergency Room series is known, among other things, for its statements on various political and social issues (e.g. homosexuality). This season, this is particularly highlighted by the Croatian-born Dr. Luka Kovač clearly. In his life he has already seen and experienced a great deal of suffering and poverty to a degree that people from western civilization can hardly imagine today. So he expresses a lot of profound criticism of the attitude towards life of the Americans. T. perceives it as extremely decadent. Even during the scenes in Africa it becomes clear that Kovač has already experienced things that nobody can or would like to imagine (as a counterexample, Dr. Carter). He himself is actually happy to be able to live and work in a country as progressive in many respects as the United States. He is all the more shaken by how little the people there appreciate their happiness. This is repeatedly accepted as an unmistakable warning to the civilian population and the politics of the “western world” to deal carefully and gratefully with the gift of prosperity, security and peace.

The following quote comes from the final episode of the ninth season "Kisangani", which is completely set in the Congo :

Luka: 'At the beginning there is always this hollow chatter about national consciousness and patriotic slogans. But after a few weeks it becomes something like this: nothing but death and grief. These people only want what everyone wants. Enough to eat for their children. You want them to grow up carefree and happy. They don't care where exactly the border is or what the next president is called. They want it to stop. '
John: 'To be honest, I have absolutely no idea what makes the politicians tick here.'
Luka: 'You are American, Carter. You believe that if people are given the chance to introduce democracy, everything will come naturally. '
John: 'What's the alternative? A military dictatorship or what? '
Luka: 'You wage your wars from heaven, with bombs and missiles. And then your planes return to the aircraft carrier and the pilots watch Drew Carey on satellite television. '
John: 'In Iraq our soldiers died!'
Luka: 'Yes, but your children don't starve to death if their fathers fight somewhere! Your women are not raped! I remember how newspaper articles and television reports made it increasingly clear that a war was imminent. And then my family was wiped out. I didn't even know what this war was about. What could be so important? My children were dead. '"
