Emil Theil

Emil Theil (born July 23, 1892 in Leipzig , † December 27, 1968 in Bremen ) was a Bremen politician ( SPD ) and senator .

biography

After his school days, Theil learned the trade of an iron lathe apprentice. He already joined the socialist movement as an apprentice. From 1911 to 1913 he was editor in Kiel . Theil was chairman of the USPD in Kiel, was arrested after the January strike in 1918 - he had given a speech on Wilhelmplatz - and sentenced to two years imprisonment for alleged treason. After the First World War he became a city councilor in Kiel. In 1920 he came to Bremen as managing director of the metal workers' association. From 1921 to 1933 he was a member of the Bremen citizenship for the SPD and from 1922 to 1933 chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. From 1927 to 1933 he was also secretary of the consumer cooperative “Vorwärts” in Bremen.

During the time of the National Socialists , he initially found no work after his dismissal. Persecuted by the National Socialists, he was imprisoned or in a concentration camp for 3 ½ years . Initially sent to the Mißler concentration camp , he was brought to prison in 1935 after a trial and then to the Sachsenhausen and Dachau concentration camps for two years . The last imprisonment took place after the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 . In between he was employed at AG Weser until 1944 .

After the Second World War , the last SPD parliamentary group leader in Bremen, Emil Theil, declared the SPD's right to participate in the formation and participation of the government. A few weeks later the first discussions with the Americans took place and on June 6, 1945 the military government set up the Bremen Senate and appointed Theil as Senator for Construction. He was building senator until 1955; he was succeeded by Senator Alfred Balcke . Theil initiated the reconstruction of the city of Bremen. In his day, Dr. Ing.Rosenberg appointed senior construction director and thus head of the construction division. Theil was then again from 1955 to 1967 a member of the Bremen citizenship. As the list successor to the Bremerhaven Bundestag member Philipp Wehr , who died in February 1960 , he was a member of the German Bundestag until the new election in 1961 . He also worked in numerous voluntary functions in non-profit societies and organizations.

The Senator-Theil-Strasse in Obervieland was named after him
