Emmanuel Jungclaussen
Emmanuel Jungclaussen OSB (civil: Walter Jungclaussen; born May 15, 1927 in Frankfurt (Oder) ; † December 8, 2018 in Niederalteich ) was a German Benedictine priest , abbot of Niederaltaich monastery and spiritual writer .
Life
Emmanuel Jungclaussen grew up in a Protestant family and was given the first name Walter. His father Franz Jungclaussen († 1947) was a co-owner of the H. Jungclaussen tree nursery . The war ended up moving Walter to Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein . Jungclaussen converted to the Catholic faith and began studying philosophy and theology for the Diocese of Osnabrück in 1949 at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main . In 1953 he was ordained a priest and took up his first position as chaplain in Fürstenau .
In 1955 Walter Jungclaussen entered the Benedictine monastery in Niederaltaich , a monastery in which ecumenism with the Eastern Christians and the Byzantine liturgy were particularly cultivated. As a Benedictine, Jungclaussen received the religious name Emmanuel. One of his areas of responsibility as a monk was teaching at the St. Gotthard Gymnasium in Niederaltaich Abbey (1956 to 1993). After Abbot Placidus Stieß retired, Jungclaussen was elected Abbot of Niederaltaich. He held this office from 1989 to 2001. His motto was "Truly seeking God". Jungclaussen sought the spiritual deepening of monastic life and both the Benedictine spirituality of the Western Church and the contemplative of the Eastern Church in Niederaltaich and to make this accessible to his monks and interested laypeople.
During his time as Abbot of Niederaltaich, Emmanuel Jungclaussen campaigned for a free flowing Danube between Straubing and Vilshofen. For this he received the Bavarian Nature Conservation Prize in 2008 from the Bund Naturschutz in Bayern .
Act
Jungclaussen devoted himself to contemplative spirituality, contemplation and meditation , and wrote several books, including standard works on the Jesus prayer .
In 1996, his lecture at the 46th Lindau Psychotherapy Weeks made this method of prayer known to a broader specialist public as a supportive measure in psychotherapy and gave the impetus to further develop the Jesus prayer as a therapeutic measure.
Jungclaussens contribution to the ecumenism of the Catholic Church with the Eastern Churches lies in the creation of a mutual understanding for the other spirituality. The Benedictine, who is at home in both forms of spirituality, was able to convince both sides. In the Eastern Churches - according to Hilarion Alfejew - " dogmatics and mysticism ", that is, faith and spirituality, are "inseparably linked", so that ecumenism grows less through theological discourse than more through spiritual encounter.
As early as 1967 Jungclaussen expressed the opinion that the apparition of Mary in Fátima represented a problem for many Catholics, although he was critical of the cult of Mary there itself.
